Karen's Story
Life
After college (Dartmouth), I moved to Seattle, Washington, which had been named the "Best Place to Live" by Forbes Magazine. I worked for a top ad agency for 4 years - 2 years in Seattle and 2 in Portland, Oregon, where I lived for 13 years.
Moved on to a great job as Sr VP of Development and Community Relations for a children's services agency that worked primarily with abused young children.
From there, joined a Northwest capital campaign/ fundraising/ leadership development consulting firm run by a good friend, then hired on at Dartmouth as a Leadership Giving officer, raising money from West Coast alumni while working out of my home.
I've been married; now divorced. We're good friends still. No children, although my ex-husband and I have been "co-parenting" the two boys, now ages 16 and 21, of my best friend, Pauline. She lost her husband, Steve, to cancer in 1996 when he was only 37 years old. We had pr...Expand for more
omised Steve that we would always look out for the boys so that Pauline wouldn't have to go it alone. So we've done the carpool, doctor's appointments and various games and matches, along with every holiday and loved every minute of it. It's been a blessing.
I moved to Dallas, TX in 2004 to be closer to my parents. My mom had a massive stroke on Valentines Day in 2001. It's been hard on my father being the primary caretaker, so I decided it was time to come help. My older brother, Eric (1983 WHS grad), lives here too, although travels far and wide for a management consulting firm.
I'm now working one of the leading public relations and communications firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex - Cooksey Communications. It's a small, but awesome, group of people and we have a broad range of clients.
