Karen Lenore's Story
I left home shortly after high school and worked in various jobs until, at the age of 21, I realized that I needed a career. I applied to take several civil service tests and was fortunate enough to get on with the U.S. Customs Service in Nogales, Arizona. This was terrific; I had quite a bit of family in the area.
Over the years Iÿve had several different jobs with Customs. I became a uniformed Customs Inspector on the Mexican Border back when women in that field were few and far between. I left this position to go into the commercial side of Customs, which was a much better fit for my personality. (The legal language of value laws and court cases on classification seemed to dovetail with my love for foreign languages!) Iÿve moved all over the country but consider Arizona to be the home of my heart. While Iÿve enjoyed the amenities of a big city I find that I prefer little podunk towns like Shady Shores, Texas where the 75 year-old mayor puts on her jeans and boots to work on the volunteer pot-hole fil...Expand for more
ling crew. Iÿm currently a supervisory import specialist living 30 minutes west of Cleveland, Ohio.
Iÿm a widow. My husband died in 2008. We had been married almost ten years. I always wanted children but was never blessed with them. On the other hand, I have three precious little granddaughters (and another on the way) living in Dallas, Texas with my stepson and his wife. Iÿve always admired (and envied a bit) the people who are still married to the spouse of their youth. Iÿve been married and divorced and twice I have been widowed.
Iÿm a cat mom. Iÿve had cats all of my adult life and donÿt care to contemplate life without them--cat hair and all. I have a long-haired calico who is a shelter kitty, a ragdoll and two Maine Coon cats.
Iÿve heard several people say that they have no regrets. I canÿt make that claim, but Iÿve led an interesting life. Iÿve seen some amazing things and have even done a few of them myself.
Iÿd love to hear from the people I knew in school.
