Karen's Story

Life I began my life in Bradford, PA, and attended school there through the seventh grade when my family moved to Meadville, PA, after Dad bought the Meadville Bowling Lanes on Water Street. I attended 8th grade through high school in Meadville. In 1965 I got my BS in Ed. at Edinboro, and in 1966 married John Whitehead from Saegertown, Class of 58. I taught at Millcreek District in Erie and then went to teach in East Cleveland, Ohio. I earned my master's degree at Case Western Reserve University in 1976 and did graduate work at Cleveland State University. John died in 1980 from leukemia. In 1984 I married Richard Lynn from MHS, class of 57. I retired from elementary teaching in 1998 and now play organ, piano, and keyboard and direct the choir at Nottingham United Methodist Church in Cleveland where I am very involved. Richard died in April 2004 from lymphoma and is certainly missed. I have 3 adult children,Tracy, David & Heather Whitehead and 3 stepchildren--Deena, Dawn & Doreen Lynn. Altogether I have 10 grandchildren, 4 boys & 6 girls. Since 6 of them live in the Cleveland area, I get to see them often. I love spendng time with them...and they love to come to my house to bake and play games. I'm a volunteer tutor in reading and math for the Cleveland Schools...as well as assisting students with computer skills. I sing in the Greater Cleveland Sweet Adeline chorus as well as Scioto Valley Chorus near Columbus, both award winning choruses that also compete internationally. I also sing with a small group called Hooked on Harmony and 2 women's barbershop quartets named Cat's Meow and the Belles. We perform a great deal in the Cleveland area, singing acapella music barbershop style. It's a great hobby and I've always loved music. 2012 was a year of changes for me to learn and try new things. I trained as a DJ on a nonprofit radio station (FM 91.5, WKHR) and now have a regular music show on Tuesdeay AM from 8-10 and Thursday AM. from 10 to 1 pm. You can listen live on your computer at WKHR.ORG, 91.5 FM My other new adventure has been to play theater organ...somewhat different from the church organ that I play each Sunday. I've had ...Expand for more
the privilege of playing at Cleveland's Connor Palace Theater at Playhouse Square. It certainly has been a thrill for me!! My parents, Forney & Arline Mitchell, who used to own the former Meadville Bowling Lanes on Water Street, both died in 1999. My dad was at Wesbury Nursing Home and there I found Miss Harriet Brown who used to teach history at MHS. I believe that she died in 1999 also. I'd love to hear from old friends and classmates. I'm looking forward to our next class reunion. The 55th was great fun. I travel a lot and enjoy seeing our wonderful country and visiting relatives and friends wherever I go. I had the privilege of visiting and singing barbershop harmony all over Great Britain in June of 2007. I loved the people there as well as the many castles and cathedrals. I traveled to Hawaii in November 2008 and again in 2013 where my chorus competed in international competition. I had never been to Hawaii and found many beautiful areas and exciting things to do. We competed in Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas three times, Honolulu twice, Portland, Indianapolis, etc, Competing in International competition sure makes me travel a lot. The Greater Cleveland Chorus is now 20th in the world. My other Sweet Adeline Chorus called Scioto Valley Chorus is 4th in the world. Yeah! I still travel to Meadville on a regular basis to visit family and friends or the cemetery. Contact me and maybe we can get together the next time I come to Meadville or perhaps near to where you live now. I certainly keep busy in so many ways! I go to the Y for water exercises and go walking daily, belong to a book club which meets once a month, vacation and travel as often as I can and try to keep in touch with old friends as much as possible. I am a survivor of kidney cancer and open heart surgery and have had several health challenges along the way, but I keep bouncing back. Life has been good and I really love the many activities that I am experiencing. I've been making changes in my life and meeting lots of new people lately, enjoying the challenge and excitement of new friends and new activities as well as seeing old friends.. I really feel blessed.
