Karen's Story

Life After a brief stint in upstate NY as a pastor of a rural church (where, in addition to pastoring, I drove the town ambulance), I have been living in the SF Bay Area since 1989. I have been a campus minister (SF State) and pastor of a local church in San Francisco. While in SF, I performed the first legal same-sex marriage in a United Methodist Church. It was an incredible privilege. Before I left the local church, the City proclaimed "Rev. Dr. Karen Oliveto Day" in July 2004. This grants one to park anywhere in the city free for a day, as well as gets one out of jail (something that comes in handy, since I have been arrested several times with other religious types doing nonviolent civil disobedience--mainly around advocacy for th...Expand for more
e homeless and anti-war protests). Currently, I am the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley (where I received my Master of Divinity. Additionally, I have a PhD in Religion and Society from Drew University in NJ). I am also an adjunct professor of United Methodist Studies. I am the co-author of "Talking About Homosexuality: A Congregational Resource", published by Pilgrim Press (and available on amazon.com!). I love to travel, the more adventuresome the better! Some of my favorite places include Newfoundland and Nicaragua (I've been there four times). I also love to hike, cook for friends, and play the drums (which I took up after I finished the PhD). I'd love to hear from WBHS folks.
