Karen's Story

Life My two brothers and two sisters and I attended Soak Creek Elementary School when it was a four room schoolhouse with two grades per room. We had four teachers, our principal was also our basketball coach. The female teachers sewed our cheerleading unifiorms and drove us in their private vehicles to our out of town basketball games. (Stoco and Slab Fork and Cranberry!!) That was when Skelton Bottom was Skelton Bottom. We had Field Day or May Day right before school let out for summer. Charlie Mills was our custodian for the entire seven years that I attended that school and remained as such for years after I had moved on to Mabscott Grade School. We had small book shelves in the back of each room and after that you went to the book mobile every other week if you wanted more to read. Our music teacher came once in a while. He brought with him an autoharp on several occasions and taught us Sweet Betsy From Pike. Our school cook made real corn bread and beans from scratch. All of the meals prepared in the school at that time were a blessing to many of us and the hand of love stirred the pot. For Thanksgiving the school kitchen served turkey with all the fixin's and we drew names fo...Expand for more
r Christmas. James Hartsog,Shirley Cook,Ruth Snyder Winfrey,Nora Nooncaster,Mrs.Whorley to name a few didn't just teach us. They looked after us in such a way that we were all better for their efforts. Mrs. Hughes' Country Kitchen at the end of the reddog school road was our respite. We could get a chili dog with cole slaw and a can of pop and a bag of chips or candy bar for about a quarter. If you skipped the chips or candy you cold play Elvis or Roy Orbison on the juke box. We all walked up and down the creek to each others birthday partys or to spend week ends with friends. Donna Cox,Vickie Davis and Nancy Cline were my best friends. I would love to hear from any of the folks who were on the creek during the fifties and sixties. Our neighbors were Dorla and Carl Adams and their children and Oakey and Janet Cox. Victor and Billy Vault were among our best friends. Ronald Mills. Bobby and Freddy Lovell. Keester Lillly. The Chavez children. Carl Mars. Robert Worley. The McGanns. Wayne Willis. Jimmy Sizemore. WHERE ARE ALL OF Y'ALL What a wonderful place to grow up. No matter where else I have traveled to or lived in the world I have never forgotten Soak Creek. Karen Samples Gaddy
