Karen's Story

It would make me very happy if my friends remembered as kind, thoughtful, and intelligent, but I fear that people who knew me would come forth with a differing description-warts and all. I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a OK idea. As it turns out, they were dead wrong. I can't stand wearing a lab coat. The only thing that I havedone that I consistently enjoyed every time is writing. Unfortunately, I lack the talent to make a living from it, so it has become a hobby. I write constantly. I write every day. I wake up from a deep sleep in the middle of the night to scribble a sudden idea. I write lists and I write cheques. I write schedules that I seldom keep and I write memos that I either lose or don't understand. And somewhere in there is the hope that I will one day finish one of the many manuscripts that I have begun. (Did I mention that I have ADD?) My favorite way to blow off steam is to make a joke of it, and laugh myself silly. Also I have been know to throw melamine dishes. It plays to the masochist in me. I don't think I ever did anything wild in school. I was much too timid. I was shy too. Yeech! Instead, things happened to me- like the time I was leaving the classroom and the doorknob came of in my hand- I wandered around for a half hour looking for the caretaker so I could give it to him and he could fix it- but I couldn't find him, so I went to the office to ask them what I should do- and they came after me like the villagers after Frankenstein's monster. Can you believe that they thought I did it on purpose? I told them that there was a screw loose and I didn't have a screwdriver, but they seemed to feel I was speaking of my mental health. I got a detention. If I'm going to work somewhere I need caffeine to be able to deal with the day to day. Sometimes it's the minute to minute. My hero is Millard Fillmore. My inspiration comes from watching gasoline floating on rain puddles. I have lived- oh boy have I lived. I usually moved because I had too much furniture. And too many books. The three people from my past who I'd most like to see again are Martha Madden and Jane Gillespie, because I miss them.. and Sylvis Plesis to see if she's as beautiful as I remember. Sports, reality TV, Pets? Obsessions? None of those things. Grout. I am obsessed with grout. My biggest surprise in life is that I'm still here. If I could improve my home, I'd bulldoze my neighbours on either side. To me, teachers were an unnecessary evil in school. They knew t...Expand for more
oo much for my own good. If I won $100 million, I'd set up a bail trust for my family, change my name and leave town. What is the Greek system? I knew a greek geek for a while, but he didn't have any system that I could see. To be truly happy I would be a kahuna with great powers. First, I would focus on the Great Wall of China and repair it so that it once again would be whole and perfect. And when the Chinese called a press conference to take credit for my work, I would focus on George Bush the younger, who would be sleeping in his bed in Washington D.C. When the ceremonies in China were underway, I would transport dubbayuh smack into their midst wearing nothing but a smile My career aspirations are to retire. Which first crush would that be? Oh- THAT one. At eighteen I had a certain eclectic style- using different colours and combinations to express my "Unique" self. Today if my clothing has the same effect, you know I got dressed in the dark. The weirdest job I have ever had was crocheting snoods. I share my home with Pudd E. Tat, Impish, and Pumpkin Pie, which I find hilarious. I have always wanted to be the stereotypical woman with cats. My mantel is completely obscured by the cartons of books piled in front of it. I have 12,000. I think it's time to move again. If I got one do-over, the thing I would do differently is my hair. In 10 years, I hope to be above ground. I'm going to get there by prayer, counting and determination. My oldest friend is 92. We met through business, and we clicked because I suggested to her that spice up her life by having an affair with a younger man. I don't really remember much about work, if you asked about my theories on life, or the new colours for spring, or the relevance of string theory, I can certainly expound upon them- after all, everybody's entitled to my opinions. The thing about me that would surprise everyone at the high school reunion if I showed up. When I was three, a pair of robins began to build a nest in our elm tree. And every night, when he got home from work, my father would hold me up so that I could watch them build their nest. And every night, when he got home we would go out to check their progress. We watched them through the new home construction, and the egg laying and the nest sitting, and the hatching, and the learning to fly. And one evening, the nest was empty. And my father explained to me that the robins's jobs was complete, and that the children had left home so that the parents could get back to their lives. I know how they felt.
