Karen's Story

After graduating from South River High School in 1973, I spent the next years of my life furthering my education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (a.k.a., Virginia Tech) where I earned my BS in Biology in 1977. I would have preferred to remain in Virginia where my heart was, but alas, opportunities were few for microbiologists in southwest Virginia, so I returned home to South River. I often wish I had remained in Virginia after graduation, but my life took a different path than what had been planned. My first job was an internship as a medical microbiologist at St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick. I loved hospital work, but there were college loans to pay and romantic dreams of the future, all of which required a regular income. Therefore, when an opportunity arose to work at E.R. Squibb & Sons (now Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.), I reluctantly left the hospital and began my career in the pharmaceutical industry which lasted 32+ years. Beginning as a quality control microbiologist, I held subsequent positions of increasing responsibility in various functional areas within BMS until I settled in the Regulatory Affairs department, eventually taking on the challenge of conceptionalizing, organizing and staffing the export labeling group as its Director - quite different from my initial microbiology aspirations, but there was a logical progression. ough the drug development process, working with scientists, medical personnel and the FDA to bring several life-saving therapies to market. My position provided opportunities for travel which I often took advantage of until I was no longer able to overcome my long-term fear of flying. My "wings have been clipped" and travel is now limited to domestic destinations, although I still long for far-off locations. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford early retirement, and since June 1, 2010, my husband, Peter Kiczula (to whom I've been married since September 28, 1991) and I have been sharing our time between our home in South River and "Donum Pacis," our 25 acre farm in Deerfield, Virginia. I've finally been able to "relax" and pursue my hobbies (watercolors, gardening, reading, antiquing, refinishing/repurposing furniture) in rural Virginia, which I have loved since my Virginia Tech days. I've been an anglophile for as long as I can remember, and one of my passions has been to renovate our Virginia home into a quaint cottage reminiscent of the English countryside. We are hoping to relocate permanently to Deerfield in the near future, but for now we are still in South River, a few houses down the road from where I spent most of my life. Life has been filled with surprises, happiness, & some disappointment, but all in all has been very good to me. I've enjoyed sharing memories and reconnecting with special people through this site.
