Karmel's Story
Life
Greetings from San Jose, CA - the heart of Silicon Valley! Married in 1981, we became Born Again Christians in 1986. Our oldest son, Leo III, was born in 1987 and the youngest one, Travis, was born in 1989 - just 9 days after the Loma Prieta earthquake (the one that interrupted the World Series between the A's & the Giants). We get back to Rochester occasionally and always look forward to RAHS Reunions! Our oldest son, Leo III is now in the Army - HE LOVES THE ARMY. He graduated from HS on a Thursday in 2005 and left for basic training the following Tuesday. Left as a teenager (only 17) with a serious attitude - but by the end of basic (2 weeks after his 18th birthday), he had grown to be a MAN with a very disciplined outlook on life. We are all so proud of the man that he has become. It is now November 2008 and our oldest turned 21 just this past August. He is currently stationed at Ft. Riley, KS - returning from a 15 month deployment to Baghdad in April 2008. Travis graduated in June, 2008 and is now attending the local junior college and working part time in the after-school program of the elementary school that the boys attended. Like my husband, he is nuts about all forms of racing and LOVES motorcycles. I am currently working in the Space business - as is my husband, Leo. We both look forward to retirement in Florida. In fact, we recently returned from a vacation to Florida where we connected with old friends and looked at some retirement properties. My parents are still in the same home in Rochester, MI - still on the STATE STREETS (Arizona) and have officially retired from Amway. My Dad had to enter a nursing home in February 20...Expand for more
07. It has been a difficult adjustment for everyone - but it is a necessary adjustment. My brother, Scott, is helping Mom deal with Dad. I am grateful that he is still local in Rochester and that he seems to be OK with still living w/ the folks. My parents celebrated 58 years of marriage in August 2008. - my husband and I celebrated 27 years this past September. In 2005, we became parents to 2 black fluffy kittens - I call them Lucy & Ethel. My husband calls them 8-Ball & Speed Bump . . . Leo has a really weird sense of humor. I am currently easing into retirement from the YMCA. Since 1996, I taught anywhere from 2 to 4 Water Exercise classes a week. The joy suddenly went out of teaching (after 15 years of involvement in the Aquatics program) - so I decided to phase it out. I am happier HELPING the teacher. Please pray for our soldiers around the world and that all these wars will soon come to an end - hoping to hear from RAHS Class of 1974 SOON!
Workplace
I have held a wide variety of positions in my adult life. One of the most 'educational' was working as a manager for Denny's restaurants - GRAVEYARDS! The customers and employees were all quite an experience. Probably most surprising is that since 1985, I have worked in a 'high tech' industry - aerospace! I have worked on the space shuttle program and various military communication programs while working for Lockheed Martin (Lockheed in the earlier days). That is the job that provides food and roof. The job that provides sanity is with the local YMCA where I teach Aqua Aerobics several times a week. I wonder what I will do for 'sanity' when I am fully retired from the Y in April 2009?
