Kathleen's Story
2009--The year we all turn 60!
I have had a lot of fun getting in touch with people through Classmates. This kind of contact would have been impossible just a few years ago. I've heard from friends as far back as first grade, and from former students. It brings back memories I would never have thought of. Even just seeing a name(and sometimes a picture) of someone is enough to make me smile. Thank you.
I have been married to Tom Henricks since 1993. We live near the Dunes in Indiana, and like it here a lot. Tom works for Ozinga, and I am retired, after teaching English for 33 years.
I have a daughter, Danielle, who has three little girls, and I have a son, Eric, who has a three year old girl, Gwendolyn, and two older step children. Being a grandma is the joy of my life. The kids call me "Meme."
Being retired now, I have some "hobbies." I have written books for each of Danielle's girls, and illustrated them with photos and little drawings. And I am playing around with painting. It is fun! I'm like the new Grandma Moses--primitive in style.
Right after high school I married Irv Lester, and we had the 2 kids. We divorced in 1981, but stayed friends. Irv died March 19,2006 of cancer, and we all miss him. Tom was married to Debbie Bergstrom, but they divorced a long time ago,too. We were sad to learn that Debbie passed away, also.
School
I started school in Miss King's kindergarten at Warren Public School in Chicago. I went to Warren on and off until aft...Expand for more
er 6th grade. I have some really good memories of those days. I was a good student, and I loved to read.
Then we moved To Dolton, and I went to Berger for junior high.I met my two best friends,Sherry Clark and Sue Scovie there.
I didn't become my real self until I got to high school.
Thornridge was great for me. I love to remember the big snow of 1967, games and bus rides, pep assemblies, and friends. I am still in touch with Sherry Clark, Jim Brask, Sally Peterson, Val Gradl, Patti Jansma, and Rich DeRobertis. Our good friends Bob Pierce, Tom Wingler, and my first husband, Irv Lester, have died. But we all remained friends all these years.
College
After graduation I went to Augustana in Rock Island for a year. Then Irv and I married in 1968, and went to Thornton Junior College for a year. We each worked part time and went to school full time. Then we went to Illinois State University and became English teachers.
There we both worked full time and went to school full time. We had Danielle while Irv was student teaching. After we separated in 1979 I moved to Crete, and got my masters in education at Governors State University.
Workplace
I taught for 7 years at Herrick Junior High in Downers Grove while Irv taught at Downers Grove High School North. Then I taught for 12 years at Crete Monee High School.
Then I went to Morton East High School in Cicero, where I finished the last 14 years of my career. Now I'm free from grading papers, and do whatever I feel like!
