Workplace
Hmmm....I guess my work career really began in grammar school. It was in the 7th grade when I first started taking care of kids, via mother's-helping and then babysitting. It was also then when a few classmates and I would help the Pre-K teacher set up for the afternoon session. Of course, little did I know that I would be teaching the siblings of these Pre-Ker's years later!
In high school, thanks to my 10th grade global history teacher, I became involved in Songcatchers, an organization that seeks to "reach for peace through music." I started attending their "Make a Difference Days" and ...Expand for more
a year later began volunteering as a piano teacher in its newly-formed Afterschool Music Program. Fifteen years later, I am still very much involved in Songcatchers: as Assistant Director while also teaching piano in the After-School Music Program, working as a counselor at the summer Choir Camp, and singing as a soprano in the Concert Choir. So much fun!
I started teaching general music at Holy Name, my grammar school, in Sept. 2002. At first, it was a little strange teaching at the school you once went to, and having your former babysitees now your students! (Even now I find myself thinking back to when I went there, especially since some of my teachers and the principal are still there!) In Oct. 2003, while going back full-time for my Masters, I started teaching music at another local Catholic school, St. Joseph's. In Sept. 2004, I began teaching at Our Lady of Solace in the Bronx (in case you're keeping track, that's 3 schools). When OLS closed in 2006, I looked for another school to replace it and found Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in the Bronx not too far away. I taught at HNS, SJS, and OLMC for 4 years full-time. In Sept. 2010, I left St. Joseph's to become the Assistant Director of Songcatchers. I'm enjoying both the part-time teaching and the administrative/development work I do with Songcatchers. It's a busy life, but someone has to do it! :)
