Kathleen's Story
College
The student population at UF was the same as the total population of my hometown. My favorite memories centered around St. Augustine Catholic Student Center. My other extra curricular activity was seeing political celebrities and getting involved in politics. My major was special ed. Actually my first major was physical therapy.
After college I ended up joining the military and getting married and having 2 children, one of which was handicapped.
Some of the electives I enjoyed were Music for Classroom Teachers (reqired for elementary ed, suggested for special ed), and Comparative Religions--West. I wish I had also or instead of taken the companion course of Eastern Religions.
I also liked Psycology classes and English classes. I don't remember any of t...Expand for more
he instructors' names. One memory I have about my major is going to McDonalds with my textbook for learning about emotionally disturbed children and when asked what it was about I quipped, we're learning to be emotionally disturbed! One instructor that quarter said that he was on a plane when he heard that Gov. Wallace had been shot and everyone had a ho-hum attitude about the announcement--we'd seen too many assassinations in the last 9 years.
At commencement our speaker said he was wedged timewise between a speech at another college by the President (Nixon) and a horse (Secretariat) in the last race in the
Triple Crown. Years later I could remember the president and the horse, but had trouble remembering the speaker's name. (It turned out to be Gov. Collins.)
