kathy zimmerman:

CLASS OF 1970
Harrisville, WV

kathy's Story

I just retired from thirty-eight years of teaching high school English and theater. The past eight years were in Oakland, MD after I married Dave and moved here from Morgantown. Had I known retirement would be this amazing, I would probably have retired years ago. I suppose that the person you retire with probably impacts that. I taught theater for twenty years at Morgantown High and enjoyed that too. I suppose I've had a pretty good run so far...hope it keeps going. Memories of high school have often surfaced through the years and each time I begin to wonder what happened in the lives of some of you. With my happily limited computer skills, I decided to join this sight. I haven't accessed too much yet, but am disappointed when I check a classmate's name and nothing has been written. I hurried to my sight to write something...when skills permit, I'll add a picture. My daughter is now 31 and has given us two beautiful little boys, ages one and three, and my 33 year old son is childless by choice. My husband and I spend time walking and bicycling in good weather, but Garrett County winters keep us indoors. He is practicing the banjo in the kitchen as I write this. rom thirty-six years as a K-5 music teacher. He has been attempting to enhance my computer skills and I am as resistant to that as I was to high school math (I should apologize to Mr. Pew for what I put him through and thank him for never giving up on me.) Many good high school memories stem from shared classes and the teachers who guided us through them. I remember Mrs. Snider at age sixty-two saying she would never want to be eighteen again. Our class found that hard to believe because she was so old. Her answer became a mantra that I have carried through the years with me. She said, "If the age you are right now is not the best age you've ever been, fix it. You are the only one who can." Of course, she qualified it with how tough it is to fix anything when you are only eighteen and "everyone" is still your boss. If you sort of share that memory with me but remember it a different way, please don't disabuse me. We each take what we need from our school experiences and that one memory saw me through some tough spots. I would love to know what high school memories helped shape you. So, if you find yourself in the mood to share, I'll hang on every word and I won't dispute your version...
