Katherine (Martin)'s Story
Life
My Love
In 2003 I met a very special man. He works in corrections and looks good in uniform. To make a long story short, he proposed on Valentine's Day and we were married on June 16, 2005. We are settling in very nicely together (all 5 of us).
My Kids
First is my little girl. She is a great joy. When Christmas vaction started for her pre-school she was mad because she loves to go to school. She is now in 4th grade and still hates vacations and any other time she can't go to school. I think this summer will be a little easier for her because there are other kids in the house that she can do things with. She really does love school. She is not only an Honor Roll student but also in the gifted program at shcool.
It's official!!! I am now a stepmom. The oldest girl was born the year I graduated - 1986. She doesn't live at home anymore. Next is a boy a year younger who plays football. If Northridge had had some players as big and good as he is I do believe they would have been very hard to beat. Last but not least is a 16 year old girl who is going through all the problems that come with being a teenager now.
We get along good and they like my daughter. They are sweet kids and I really love them. One thing I've tried to make clear to them is that I will never replace their mom. I don't want to take her place but I am someone they can come and talk to if they have a problem and aren't sure where to turn.
My Job
I am now a certified teacher's aide and work as a substitute. I have four schools that call me in advance to book me to sub. So far I have enjoyed every time I've subbed. I love the knowledge that I'm helping these kids learn. I really do love some of the pre-school kids that I've worked with. Seeing the changes that they've made since I first met them in December is just really something. One of the biggest joys I had was when one boy who d...Expand for more
oesn't speak much told me goodbye. His personal aide thought it was great too.
Workplace
I started out in the Air Force. Was there for 4 1/2 months before I received a medical discharge.
Next I tutored at COTC. I really did enjoy helping other students improve their grades. Did that for two or three years until I had to withdraw from school.
Then I worked as an indepentant contractor for the Newark Advocate. I delieved papers to stores and carriers in Licking county. I hated it. The pay stank and I had to drive 100 miles seven days a week.
Next was working for a valet parking service at Columbus airport. I started as a valet and had worked my way up to a van driver. After over 11 years, my supervisor fired me because I wouldn't stay and let her fight with me. That happened two weeks before I was leaving anyway.
I now work as a substitute teacher's aide. I love doing it and like that fact I'm helping the kids I work with learn.
Military
I went into the Air force in the fall after gaduation. Basic Training was at Lackland AFB in Texas. I made Honor Grad. (I was the only one in my flight of around 50 to do it.) Then it was on to Tech School training with the Security Police. When we did qualify shooting with the M-16 I shot five points below expert using a badly sighted weapon. Three weeks into tech school, I was pulled from training because of a knee injury. I was discharged after 4 1/2 months.
I really enjoyed my time in service. It gave me a self-confidense that I didn't have in high school. I still tend to use my "military strut". I also was able to understand myself better. I made many friends and visited one of them in Europe (I loved it!).
All in all even with the state of things now, I would recommend enlisting to anyone who asked me. It can help make a better person of you and if you go in wanting to make something of yourself you can.
