Katrina's Story

Life I left college my junior year to go into the Army. I found that I really loved being there. I've been stationed in Panama, Korea, Kentucky, Hawaii, Texas and I'm currently in Kentucky, just this time at Fort Knox instead of Campbell. Last year, I was in Iraq. I met my husband in Korea. We have one son and can't wait to have more. We don't see each other much as we are on different rotations but we make the most of the time we have. I work in Human Resources. We have a cat but when our son is older will probably get a dog, too. I love to read books and run still. But my favorite thing to do is spend time with my son. My husband just went back to Iraq for his third rotation. We are working getting him assigned to Fort Knox after he returns to Fort Hood in Feb. School I went to three different high schools so my memories vary. AC was definitely my favorite. I wish I could have done all four years there. I only attended Bay View for a semster to attend one class. It was different than any school I had every been too but I made some good friends there. I spent the most time at WFB. I don't talk to anyone from there anymore. WFB was an interesting experience. My favorite teacher was Mr. Koerner. He was great. Everyone should have a teacher like him. College College was awesome. I made some of the best friends ever there. I loved being in F.O.C.U.S. Going to camp was the best decision I ever made. I still keep in touch with most of my friends from college but it is hard, especially when I'm out of the country. My parents don't live in WI anymore, but I go back to WI to see my college friends. Pledging AOTT was an interesting experience that I don't regret but looking back on i...Expand for more
t, wasn't as great an expereience as I thought it would be. Living in the apartment with Reba and Dani also brings up great memories. My favorite class was ROTC (not suprising since I made a career of the military!) I was disappointed when my school no longer had the program but that's okay. It still led to the foundation for my future. Workplace I never really had any jobs before the Army. I didn't work in high school or my freshman year of college. I took a year off and went into the Army Reserves. When I returned, I was a nanny for about 6 months while I waited to go back to school. That was an experience. Kids were awesome, parents not so much though. Then I worked at a Dry Cleaners while I did my sophmore year. I worked at a PR firm my junior year. I was good at it but I hated it. The only thing I liked doing was going to drill during my Reserve weekends so I decided to join the military full time. Military Being in the Army has really made a difference in my life. The Army is its own culture and one I enjoy. The current optempo is hard on my family with us being apart more than we are together. And not just a month here or a month there. More like years. It is especially rough on my son. But, I also see how it makes him be a better person, a stronger person. I like my job and love working with my Soldiers. Seeing them succeed makes you feel like its all worth it. Plus, I've gotten to live in some interesting places. Maybe I'll get to go to Europe next? Who knows. One of the things that I like about the Army is that every few years, I'm somewhere else. We moved a lot when I was a kid and I kind of got use to it. So, now I get paid to travel the world. How great is that?
