Kathryn's Story
Life
I left Fontana to spend my senior year in the Philippines and have been traveling ever since. I've lived in Africa, Asia, Saudi Arabia, Europe and the Indian Ocean working for Peace Corps, the USO and mostly the American Red Cross. Stateside, I've lived in Washington state, Maryland, North Dakota and Las Vegas. In February, 2001 I accepted a job with the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross in disaster services. After 6 years back in California (and after an absence of over 20 years) I got restless and moved to Red Cross national headquarters in Washington DC where I teach about the Geneva Conventions, a very interesting thing to be doing in Washington these days. Still single. And laid off by Red Cross after 30+ years and now happily working for FEMA with occasional deployments to help disaster survivors move on with their lives.
School
I was a hippie-nerd. Hung out with the hippies and belonged to Mu Alpha Theta, National Forensics League, Junior Statemen, and the CSF. Thespians didn't much want me but I did a lot of theater stuff.
College
Rehearse. Build scenery. Drink. Rehearse. Build scenery. Drink. Occasionally have sex (this was the era of the sexual revolution, remember).

d life as an expatriate and got a master's in International Public Admin at USC.
Workplace
Peace Corps Cameroon for two years after college. I taught English as a foreign language at the high school level. After getting my master's, I worked for the USO in Okinawa for a year and a half. Then five years managing the Red Cross in Bremerton, WA, 14 years going around the world with Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces, and 6 years doing disaster work at the Orange County (CA) chapter. I was at American Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, DC working in International Services for nine years when they laid me off. Now working for FEMA, still in DC.
Military
My first job with the military was with the USO at Camp Hansen, Okinawa - 5000 Marines on unaccompanied tours (1980-81). Later I worked for Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services (1986-2001) at eleven posts in fourteen years. Guess what? I don't work for AFES any more! I miss it, though, and in October 2006 when I had the chance to teach a Red Cross course in Japan, I jumped at the chance! Five days to Japan and back is a bit much, though.
ANNOUNCEMENT 50th Reunion scheduled for August 17, 2019. Lynn Coccia Beal, Charlie LaChance and Michelle German Rogers will have info.
