Keith's Story

It is cliche, but also true, that time passes quickly, and like most of us I guess, I wonder where so many years have gone. Yet despite that, when I think back to those school years, it seems as if I am peering through the haze of another lifetime. Perhaps some of that has to do with who I was during that time, a clueless kid, full of self-doubt and insecurities, always looking inward instead of out to the wider world. This made me pretty much invisible, but I didn’t mind. It was safer that way. It was a bit of a problem though, when it came to the crushes I endured, of which there were more than a few. nd some did not, like the one in high school with short black hair and the most beautiful face I had ever seen. I suppose at the time they were the source of some painful longing, but I think of them fondly now. In fact there was much about those days that I loved. Like being in the classroom. Learning something new, the challenge of taking tests. Those things were exciting to a smart and overly sensitive kid, and it was there that I was in my element. There was baseball, something I had a bit of talent for, and very briefly made me a little less anonymous. I remember the day we graduated, the feeling of freedom, mixed with a bit of pride, tempered by a few tears of sadness for what was being left behind.
