Ken's Story
Seems like we graduated yesterday, but it has been a long time. Following our graduation, I attended UCD and graduated in 1971. After receiving my draft notice based on my draft number of 9, I joined the Air Force in September and started a whole new life. I served for 21 years (1971-1992) as an enlisted Chinese and Russian linguist for 7.5 years with tours in Taiwan and Berlin, and then as an intelligence officer with tours in Japan, Hawaii, Washington DC (twice), and China. I was the Assistant Air Attaché in China from April 1987 thru June 1989, where I received the individual Outstanding Intelligence Collector of the Year Award in 1988 and the Outstanding Unit Intelligence Collector of the Year Award in 1989 for activities during the June Tiananmen massacre. as inducted into the Defense Intelligence Agency's Attaché Hall of Fame, as one out of less than 100 recipients over the past century. I have written numerous books, articles, and monographs on Chinas military and routinely attend conferences or seminars on the topic. If all goes well, I don't plan on retiring until I'm 70, because I enjoy what I do every day. My wife, Carol, and I have two sons and two grandsons, all of who live within 30 minutes of us in Northern Virginia. Besides my BA from UCD, I received a master's degree in International Relations from Boston University while in Germany and Japan as well as a second BA in Asian Studies from the University of Maryland while in Japan, which included studying Japanese for a year. All of the classes for both programs were night classes taken in addition to working all day in a very exciting environment. I look forward to communicating with my former classmates.
