Ken's Story
Life
Greetings from Boston, Massachusetts where I live with my partner, Jim, and our two dogs, Tiny Dancer and Barkley. I can't believe it, but as of July 2007, I've lived in New England 10 years, 9.5 of those years in Boston. I used to dream of living "somewhere else," but Boston was never a place I'd thought about until I ended up here. Now, I can't imagine life without having lived here.
Jim is a behavioral psychologist who works with kids with autism. We met at church on Ash Wednesday shortly after I moved here (1998). We bought an apartment in an old "triple decker" house in May 2000, and we have spent a lot of time and money over the years modernizing it. Our latest project is a roofdeck to take advantage of our beautiful views of the Boston skyline.
Over the past several years, we've traveled to Ireland, Iceland, France, Costa Rica, Mexico, British Columbia, England, Greece, and made several trips to Key West and other places in the USA. I make it to Bolivar at least twice a year, but I've been home several times this year.
I work as a project manager for Perot Systems, and I am also the minister of music at St. John's Episcopal Church in Jamaica Plain. I direct the choir and play the organ and piano. My M-F job pays the bills and supports the lifestyle we live, and my part-time job fills my soul.
My life is full, and I have been blessed with more laughter and joy, than heartache. I hope that you can say the same.
Cheers!
Ken
College
I've spent all of my life learning, and about 22 of my 45 years in formal education (including Mrs. Baggett's kindergarte...Expand for more
n, Bolivar Elementary, Junior High, and Central!).
I graduated from Lambuth University in 1982 with a degree in Political Science, MTSU in 1991 with a degree in History, and from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2002 with an MBA. I studied law at Wake Forest University, counseling at University of Memphis, accounting at Cal State Fullerton, and I took a class called "Religion, Liberalism, and Democracy" at Harvard. I love learning, and the more I learn, the more I know I don't know!
Most recently, I achieved the Project Management Professional certification. This is the CPA of the Project Management world, so supposedly, I know a lot about Project Management.
Workplace
I can't even tell you how many jobs I've had. My official resume includes Computer Depot, Brooks Auto Service/Radio Shack, FOCUS Healthcare, Rehability, Mariner Rehabilitation, Prism Rehab Systems, UMASS Boston, and now Marketspace Analytics. I had a couple of major setbacks in my early 20s. I was going to fly jets for the US Navy, but that didn't work out. Then I was going to be a lawyer, but that didn't work out either. So I spent the next ten years trying to figure out what to do with my life. I fell into healthcare recruiting, and that brought me to Boston. Through the years, working with computers had always been a part of every job, and that experience led me to work on a PeopleSoft implementation at UMass Boston, a 3-year consulting gig with a financial services software development firm and now to teaching at UMASS Boston and recruitment consulting for a software development firm downtown.
