Kenneth's Story

Farmer, Intel R&D, Long Haired, Biker dude... that about sums it up. After HS I went to the Navy. Was in the Naval Nuclear Power Program as an Electronics Tech. I was a Reactor Operator. I went to boot in CA then to A school (electronics) in Illinois. Then to Florida for 9 months Shore Patrol while waiting for my Nuke class to start. Made it through Nuke in Florida. Then went to prototype in Idaho Falls Idaho. Assigned to Gold Crew SSBN Ohio Class Boomer. Left the military without re-enlisting and moved back to Idaho (loved it there). I worked for IC&E there. I went around working on repeaters. My territory was from Boise to Cheyenne and Salt Lake to Dillon Montana. I was laid off when they lost the Burlington Northern Railroad Contract. I had to go back to NM for a while. I went back to LA for a couple years and worked at the Hilltop House and substitute teacher during the days. I then moved to Albuquerque. I then got a job at Ford as a new car salesman. I really did not know what I wanted to do. But I was good at cars and technical knowledge. I gained a bunch of weight while here. Not sure why. But I went up to about 280. Through my friends, I got a job at a large computer company. This was a high tech computer related supplier to the Labs. I quickly moved up and corporate moved me to Phoenix to run the internal computers. My title was something like Senior Computer and Software Support Manager or something crazy like that. I did a lot there. I managed to land a contract with Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. I came up with a method to put all their documents online and made everything paperless. Even their NRC documents. If I had only realized that this was revolutionary in the late 80's! Well that was all going well and I was the only factory trained FrameMaker consultant in the US. The boss was a crook and the company ended up missing payrolls. I left and started my own company as a VAD for Sun. That did not last long as bigger guys could hold the reserve inventory that I could not afford. So I missed out on those large contracts. On top of that, they ended up annexing the the entire backside of my property where my house stood for a new bypass... house value lost 400k and I sold for enough to liquidate the business and pay off the house. I moved back to Albuquerque and applied at a chip manufacturer when they were building a new fab. Made it through the interviews for line workers and they told me that I was way over qualified and that I would never stay there. So I went to work for Motorola as a Robotics Engineering Tech. I worked there for almost 7 years and left just before they sold out to GTE. I stayed there and worked for a little computer shop building PCs... got bored fast. I went to Manpower and worked a bunch of short but high tech jobs. My last job before I left Albuquerque was to wire a bunch of banks with CAT5 and set up the networks and servers... FUN. Somewhere by now I was at about 380 in weight. I went back to school full time at college. Dual major in CS and Technical writing. I worked as a student as a student coordinator for the computer help desk. That was fun! There was nothing more like that in Alb so I got in the car and left for who knows where. I had a big moving sale and sold everything in the house except what was in the van. We still did not know where we were going. Two weeks after deciding to leave, I left and ended up in Oregon. I went to work for a major chemical manufacturer here that made some pretty nasty chemicals for the semiconductor industry such as anhydrous ammonia. NOT nice stuff. I was the Director of IT (temp to hire from Manpower) and brought in a total and complete change to the computer infrastructure. Moved them from Peachtree (yes) to SAP R3. Once the fix was done, the CFO decided to leave and "fix" another company. He offered to take me with him. So I left for a plastic...Expand for more
s manufacturing company. They were using VT52 terminals on a terminal server in 2001! Geesh! I bought three new servers, wired the place, got a full t1 link between the PDX site and the remote site in Kentucky. I put in a new phone system and even managed the VOIP between the two offices. Now they could xfer calls and customer screens seamlessly between the two offices. Not sure what happened there. One day the "board" brought me into the office and told me that I had to lay off my entire IT group and that I was to replace them with outsourcing... No choice... I did it. The next day I was called back into the board room and they laid me off... ! Spent about 1 year kind of lazy looking for a job. Living off golden parachute and such. One morning I was watching TV and saw the planes fly into the towers. GEESH! I had just started a new company that manufactured model rockets and it was going well... I was just getting ready to close the deal with national chains like Hobby Lobby. The FAA grounded all the larger model rocket launches around the country and no more waivers were granted. The business went flat immediately. went under with all the investments gone. I went back to working for a temp agency and did a bunch of really crappy jobs like working at a bread factory. How horrible! Then Intel was hiring. I applied and was hired on immediately in the development FAB. And here I am today. Last year right after winter, I was bummed out with horrible conditions in my old neighborhood in violence. I looked around and found the farm for a great price. I moved in with 100k in equity and immediately gutted the kitchen and bathroom all the way to rafters, studs, and floor joists. Yes, it was that bad! A year later, the remodel is just about done. The farm keeps me really busy and my weight is back down to about 270. It is getting harder and harder to get it down to something a little more realistic. I need to loose another 80 or 90 though and it is going slow. The farm work sure helps though. I made a ton of mistakes and never stuck with anything long enough to really make things work out. I don't even remember much because I went through sooo much and did so many things. I actually left out a ton of things and short jobs because I can't remember exactly where they fell into the big picture. I met a bunch of people and can't remember enough to even try to find them. Several major trauma injuries (bat the head) caused a few issues as well. But I am now happy and deal with the holes in my past the best that I can. Some where in there I worked at Intuit as a phone support for Quicken (I have some performance awards) but can't quite place that. I also worked for Sitel out here in Oregon for a while as a New Products Support Specialist for General Motors. That job really sucked! I also worked as a supervisor for Verizon and managed to pilot project when they first allowed the transfer of phone numbers so people could take old numbers to new companies. I can't remember the name of the company that had that contract. I know where they are. I always wonder how hard it is to understand that some things and times in the past just slip the mind. I think that there are sooo many ignorant people out there that don't understand that. It is sad. I think that I do well but there are many times in my past that I simply don't remember. There sure are some others that remember for me though. Funny thing is that not all of them agree. So you kind of look at the ones that act like fools and believe the others. The bottom line is that there is nothing more aggravating that being accused of something you are not guilty of. The idea of karma comes in all religions. Be careful in your accusations. Anyway, I can see in the past where I wasted my time and valuable energy and how I could have bettered myself and others by looking at the big picture. Dang I was weird!
