Ken's Story
I can't say I had many close friends in high school, although I wanted to. Since I skipped the second grade, I was at least a year and in most cases two years younger than those in my class. I was small in stature (what happened to that?) and not interested in sports, so I am sure if I was noticed at all I was considered a nerd and a bookworm. Never had a "girlfriend" in high school, being younger than all the girls I had crushes on. (Stephanie Shaff, where are you? :-) )
After graduation I went to Chemeketa Community College, and got a degree in Fire Protection Technology. I enjoyed firefighting, it was exciting and rewarding, but when the medical calls began to outnumber the fire calls, I decided that wasn't for me. When my family moved to extreme eastern Oregon in 1972, I went with them. Spent about 8 years working in auto parts dealerships. I came back to Salem in 1980, since I missed the Willamette Valley. es for a man in Milwaukie. I had been restoring my own Model T Fords since my first one in 1969, and I enjoy old cars. In working for this gentleman, I was able to restore a number of antique fire engines as well, so two interests combined. In 1982 I met Cindy, and we were married in 1983. Two sons, Kevin and Shawn, were born in 1986 and 1990 respectively. After a few years I changed employers, but did the same thing, restoring antique vehicles. In about 1990 I tried having my own business doing the same thing, and I got to travel about the country a bit. I found that I didn't enjoy it so much any more so began to look for something else to do.
In 1992, I was invited to come to work for the Washington Park and Zoo Railway at the zoo here in Portland. I love steam engines, so had finally found my "niche" in life. Going into my 18th year at the zoo, I still love my job. I would love to see any of my classmates, and take you for a ride in the steam engine!
