Kenneth Bonnet:

CLASS OF 1957
Stockton, CA

Kenneth's Story

Since early childhood, I was interested in the brain-compromised individuals of all ages that touched my life. As a teen, I volunteered for autism-retarded children. In high school and university, academics led me toward a field that hardly existed in the late 1950s. University of the Pacific gave me broader scope and more detailed training. In Army Aviation, I continued to seek out materials on "neuroscience" (a term that did not exist at that time). Biochemistry, engineering level physics, calculus, philosophy and more French were sustenance. Post military, San Francisco State University master degree program was broad scoped, but emphasis was on brain biochemistry and learning and memory. U.C.Berkeley Lawrence Laboratories encouraged me and invited me often. Master degree professors encouraged doctoral studies. I married a close friend of my cousin in Palo Alto. During one year as a research director on a federal project, I applied for doctoral programs, and was accepted at molecular biology and brain function research program at Toronto. tance at Stanford Research Instititute in Menlo Park, California. Three years later, with a federal grant in brain biochemistry, I joined the faculty at New York University School of Medicine in biological psychiatry, where I have been faculty for 34 years. Living in New York was a challenge. The work was thrilling, the sideline development of a rehabilitatiive program for homeless was rewarding. Divorced for 12 years, I remarried and received a wonderful stepdaughter in the bargain. In 1996 the director of our prolific research group was striken with a stroke, and our funding faded. Since that time, I have worked more in the area of biomedical engineering, and the operation of a neurology practice in Manhattan. Retirement is unappealing but health care is essential. The three children from Palo Alto bring their families to New England every year, and all is well. The 50th Stockton College High School reunion last year was terrific, and rekindled valued relationsihps that continue. Memories of people, opportunities, training and culture in Stockton remains highly valued. Ken Bonnet
