Kenneth's Story

Life Hi everyone. You can click through the other categories and get my details of school, military, college, and current workplace(s), so I will narrate a macro view of the “rest of my life” here. In 1992 I met Michele Bordeaux during Christmas time at Fort Irwin, CA. I met her as the result of Jared Rucker convincing me to go out that night (I’m forever indebted to you Jared). One thing led to another and we were married in June of 1994. We continued to live in California for the next 3 or so. We loved, laughed, and traveled, etc. We were newlyweds enjoying life! In ‘97, I left the DOD world, and moved into healthcare. Specifically, I began working for a healthcare software company based in Georgia. In that role, I was on the road every day of every week all over the west coast. Although the frequent flyer miles and perks were great, I as never home. After 6 months, I took an opportunity to move to the east coast and a position that required significantly less travel. I worked in Greenwich, CT, the first city in traveling north on the I-95 out of New York State, about 25 miles from New York City. While there in 1998, something amazing happened. Ashley Michele was born. See what happens when you don’t travel with your job and stay home! Our lives have never been the same since. Our daughter is simply amazing. Every year I say I wish we could keep her exactly as she is, but then the next year rolls around and she becomes even more exciting. Hopefully this will last through the teenage years, as well! And yes, she is a Daddy’s Girl…and I wouldn’t have it any other way! We stayed in Connecticut until 2004. By then, we both were frustrated with the traffic, general tone of the area, etc. and came to the realization that the sheik, fast paced atmosphere was not an ideal place for us. Don’t get me wrong; absent the road rage on the highways, it is a great place to live, with some of the best schools in the country too. However, with our daughter growing up we were looking for a change of pace more conducive to a slower pace of life and a broader sense of community. As a result, we took employment and settled into central rural New York State. Yes, I used the word “rural”! When one indicates that they live in New York State, many immediately think only of NYC (sky scrapers and taxi’s). It’s OK. Before living here I did too! We live in the Cooperstown area of New York which is about 3.5 hours northwest of NYC, and about 1.5 hours west of the state capital of Albany. And yes, for you baseball fans out there, Cooperstown, NY is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. It’s a quaint little place that in my opinion offers the best of life. We have no big malls or rows of commercial restaurants. You have to drive at least an hour for that. What we do have is a family friendly environment that is rich in history, art, and various other cultural aspects that are very appealing to us. You definitely have four seasons here. During the winter months, children have to bring snow suits to school because at recess they are allowed to use school provided sleds to play in the snow! Can you believe that? That’s no California (75 degree) Christmas Day, eh? Anyhow, that is the past 16 years in a nutshell. By the way, did I mention I’m loosing my hair? It started leaving me at about age 25! I was robbed in the hair gene department. I would say “life isn’t fair”, but that wouldn’t be true! Life is grand if you let it be. I certainly enjoy mine. As far as hobbies go, my daughter is my first hobby (she keeps us busy…karate, ballet, jazz & tap, hip hop class, acting club, soccer, etc.). After that, I enjoy playing softball, motorcycle riding (spring and fall here..wow), boating (we have numerous lakes), and watching Nascar races on Sunday (my wife hates that one!). I do have one hobby I hate, however…mowing the grass! There is plenty of it up here! Be careful what you ask for; you might just get it! The length was that of about a summer! Four days after graduating from Silver Valley, James Balladad and I shipped off to ROTC basic and cadet command training at Fort Knox, KY. We both had been accepted to New Mexico Military Institute located in Roswell, NM and had to attend training at Knox before beginning college at NMMI. Although we didn’t see each other much there at Fort Knox, we had a good time…I think. Upon completion of the training, we had 2 or 3 weeks I believe to accept our military contract. If we accepted, we would attend NMMI for 2 years, receive our deferred commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and have to complete our final 2 years of a 4 year college degree to make it final. We were to serve in the reserve until our 4 year degree was complete. Well, we had the opportunity to visit Roswell before accepting our contract, which would lock us in there for the next 2 years and effectively make us Army property. At least for me, visiting Roswell was an eye opener. The place made Barstow look like an Oasis. It was desert too, but with fewer amenities than what we were used to. I remember waking up each night for the week we were there to flying bugs in my shirt and clothes. There was no AC in the barracks I was in, so we had to leave the windows open which is where the bugs came in from. Bugs in the desert in the middle of summer? How do they live and survive? We didn’t have many flying insects back in the Mojave Desert at Irwin and Barstow. Anyhow, I decided that I wasn’t interested in spending the next 2 years at NMMI, and I declined my contract. Plus, I knew that I had been accepted in UNLV, so I figured I would simply go back and attend UNLV and have fun in Las Vegas while pursuing ROTC there. So, I got back home to Irwin, was preparing to go to UNLV, and wouldn’t you know it, Congress cut ROTC programs at 50 or so schools across the nation that year for starting freshman. Yes, you guessed it, UNLV was one of them. So, my Military career ended the day I left Fort Knox (August 1st, 1990, I believe). Oh well, it was fun there for a while… After that, I lost touch with James. I’m not sure if he continued or not… Are you out there James?
