Kenneth's Story

Well, my high school years are a blur of smoke and confusion, riddled with wild parties and unwise decisions. When I actually showed up for class, I was usually seated in the back with 'like-minded' friends trying to dream up schemes to ditch class, or simply engrossed in one or another attempt at entertaining myself. School books were often discarded to make room for Role playing game books, and evening hours, that should have been dedicated to study, were filled with self indulgent pursuits. Despite my lack of academic interest however, life still dealt me an excellent hand. I lived, briefly, in Missouri and California only to return to Pinellas Park in 1989 where I met and married the love of my life. Tina and I have been married since 1990, and we have an 18 year old daughter and a 16 year old son. She introduced me to the horse industry and we eventually found our way to Ocala, Florida- the horse capital of the world. We both manage large thoroughbred breeding operations made up of 100+horses, and yearly we foal out 40 to 50 babies. Leading up to my present position, I managed a number of prominent florida breeding sheds and was involved in the careers of TB stallions, such as Candy Stripes, Lido Palace, Lycius, Golden Gear, Intidab, Worldly Manner, Spanish Steps, Greenwood Lake, Cloud Hopping, and Express Tour...just to name a few. In the summer of 2000 I shuttled to Argentina with the famous south american sire , Candy Stripes, to deliver him to the prestigious breeding facility,Haras Carampangue, a few hours outside of beautiful Buenos Aires. The eight and a half hour direct flight from Miami to my destination was exciting, and I'll never forget the feeling as I stepped off the cargo plane onto the tarmac. While loading my stallion onto the transport van that waited I felt electric and full of life, but the single thought that plagued me was, "How the heck did I wind up here?" That question was posed more at my own disbelief that I somehow had not become a product of my own jaded past...one that seemed destined to utter and complete failure. Although, it didnt take long for the sights and sounds of this amazing and strange foreign city to envelop me and replace my uncertainty with a sureness that I was exactly where I wanted to be...where I was meant to be. During my lengthy stay the local breeders were very welcoming and my tour of some of the famous farms of Argentina was memorable. Haras Vacacion, Haras La Quebrada, and Haras Santa Maria de Araras were among my favorites. My work related travels didnt end there as I later found myself at the Keeneland sales in Kentucky, on more than one occasion, working for the industry leading thoroughbred consignment company, Taylormade. All in all, my life has been filled with generous opportunities, and daydreaming in the back of the class didnt necessarily stifle my personal or professional growth. My only regret would be that I didn't learn a second and third language earlier in life. I eventually came full circle and pursued these as educational interests. I speak fluent spanish (conversational and business- with a strong emphasis on contract vernacular and veterinary terminology), and am currently learning portuguese and japanese. Language skills play an important role within the Thoroughbred industry. Being able to communicate with hispanic staff, foreign clients, and race horse enthusiasts the world over, encouraged me to dedicate myself to these studies. Better late than never... So, I am still 'riding the coat tails' of the wealthy as I manage their race horse interests, while I forge my own little niche in this industry that I like to call home. I count myself fortunate for having been able to make so many friends and business contacts from so many different countries. My life would not have been as rich without the diversity that each one brought along with them. Venezuelan, Argentinian, Mexican, Guatemalan, Peruvian, Colombian, Cuban, Japanese...the list is endless, and I'm thankful for that. UPDATE: 2008 has arrived and my employer has purchased a new farm near Versailles, Kentucky. Another chapter of my life is about to unfold as my family and I prepare for this exciting move that will bring us deeper into the heart of horse country. I am thankful for all that I have experienced in my life, and for the fact that I was able to do so with a wonderful family at my side...and as for further adventures, Japan would not be out of the realm of possibilities. I plan to spend at least one or two more breeding seasons abroad. Hopefully this will land me in Hokkaido, Japan...the breeding capital of the Far East. Onward and Upward...I bet it just gets better! -UPDATE 11/06/08- I guess the excitement never ends. Our new son was born today and I am getting ready to embrace the excitement of another little one running around the house, as my eldest is beginning to look at college prospects. No regrets...in fact I can't wait! Broderick (Brody) Ronan Farrell was born just before noon, and the whole family is pre...Expand for more
tty excited...especially his brother and sister. My wife's life as a dance instructor is growing and she quite possibly will leave behind the thoroughbred industry to focus more on her passion; Middle eastern dance and American tribal fusion. This will give her more freedom to be at home with baby Brody. . So far life has been quite a ride for me. More 'Up's' than 'Downs' and never dull or full of regret. And the strangest twist I take away from all that I have experienced is that the games, the partying, and the all around screwing up that I enjoyed so much throughout Middle and High school, ultimately played at least some small part in getting me to where I am today. I wouldn't recommend this 'road less traveled' to anyone, certainly not to my own kids, cause I'm sure that the juvenile choices like the ones I made don't often work out as well as they happened to for me. I still enjoy a gathering of friends to play an occassional table top RPG, but I've learned to do so in moderation. Fantasy games are still loads of fun, but real life is SO much more exciting! Update July 2010 Well, we have settled comfortably in Versailles, Kentucky. The farm is stunning, and the weather is awesome. My first winter wasn't bad at all...I hadn't seen snow in so long that it was almost like seeing an old friend after a long hiatus. Luck has been on my side, and I've already found a Tutor for my Japanese studies. Shes a Russian that majored in Japanese and lived in japan for quite some time. I'm learning to write and read in Hiragana, and hope to start Kanji in the fall. In exchange, I'm teaching her Spanish. Its a win-win arrangement. The Japanese community here is large, and I've already made quite a few friends that are helping me along in my endeavor to become fluent in their language. We tend to study and chat at Sushi Bars in the area, and I'm always being challenged to eat stranger and stranger things! LOL My wife is teaching Middle eastern dance at a health club three nights a week, and is also the Belly Dancer for Lexington's premiere Mediterranean restaurant. Baby Brody started walking at 8 months, and is learning new words all the time. At the time of this update he is 19 months old. So far, absolutely no complaints....Life has been pretty damn good! UPDATE: October 2013. WOW.- where does the time go? Still here in Kentucky, but the farm I came here to manage sold 3 years after we got here. Finished building my wife's new dance studio in downtown Lex, and it came out awesome if I do say so myself. Arabesque World Dance opened in January of this year and there is no looking back. August of this year I started managing a 450 acre thoroughbred farm in Paris, Ky., and its been a great experience. More responsibility, but I love the challenge. My wife, son, and I are flying to London and then traveling to the Tattersalls sales in Newmarket at the request of my new employer. Then its on to Shannon Ireland to see his other farm there. I'm super amped at the opportunity to travel to Europe as this will be my first time out that way. It should prove to be a week I'll never forget. UPDATE: 2015 Cruise to the Bahamas for my daughters wedding. Beautiful ceremony, but it makes me feel old! LOL. Wife's dance studio is in its 3rd year and she has been teaching dance and yoga 5 to 6 nights a week as well as directing stage shows in the Lexington Area. I'm still managing the thoroughbred farm and overseeing a quarantine facility for 100+ horses a year that are shipping to New Zealand from the US. its a nice break to from the norm when we are dealing with so many different breeds. I still make it back to Ocala a few times a year during the Horse sales which is plus ;) Brody Bear is almost 7 now and enjoying school. My daughter is working, married and singing for the band, Cultellarii, and my son Sterling is managing a store here in KY and enjoying being young. LIfe couldn't be better... Update March 2021 Geez, time marches on right? Our eldest son gave us our first grandson. His boy is a couple years old already, and our daughter divorced and moved to our area to be closer to family. It was weird going through covid last year, but my wife still has her studio and things are finally getting back to normal. The farm I've been managing for 7 years or more has finally sold. It's a good thing though, as I'm starting my own business and bringing all the clients to a new better location. We are also closing on a beautiful new home in just a few days just outside of Frankfort, Ky. 2021 is going to be a busy year with lots of changes! Our youngest will be turning 13 this year and is being homeschooled. He says he prefers it this way. He claims he's a lone wolf and doesn't want distractions from the other kids. Lol. He's been active though, with a local group that gets together so the kids do have time to socialize and play with others their own age. Schools have changed so much since I was a kid and I don't know if I would like them much the way they are now if I was a school-age kid... Ken
