Kenton's Story
Life
2-17-07: Well, again, been awhile since I've thought to update this. I'm 4 months and a few days from getting out of the Air Force. It's been a fun ride, but there are some other things I'd like to do that aren't really in sync with where the AF would have me. Without starting a pity party, I'll just say that the last 3 yrs have been less than spectacular even though I thought I'd be doing some really high-speed stuff. I was getting out anyway, but this last tour was the proverbial "final nail in the coffin". So I'm heading back home to ATL, not too close to mom but close enough. So if you're still in town, shoot me an email and let's meet up sometime. Oh, and if you Google me, you're sure to come across my website or some other easy way to contact me...not sure if they filter out personal contact info on this thing so I'll just leave it at that.
2-6-2006: Hmmm...been awhile since I updated this. I'll keep it as is, but add my edits in (>> <<) I guess.
I graduated from UF (University of Florida) after 5 years of torture (>>yup, torture<<) in Electrical Engineering. Absolutely the hardest thing I've ever done and I hope to never do it again, although I learned a lot (>>debatable<<).
During that time, I was an Air Force ROTC cadet and got to spend the summer of 1996 being yelled at in the "great state of Texas" at Lackland AFB (they called it "Field Training"-basically boot camp for us ROTC folks). Afterwards, I held a couple of cool jobs in the cadet corps and, in the end, got commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
After that, I went to training at Goodfellow AFB, TX (oh great, TX AGAIN!!). This place was in the middle of nowhere!! It was worth it though because afterwards, I got my (>>first<<) assignment as an Intelligence Officer for the Air Armament Center at Eglin AFB on the Florida panhandle. Of course the fact that I got such a great location for this assignment means my next one will be in Korea o...Expand for more
r Turkey or some junk like that, so I guess I'll have to enjoy it while I can (>>very prophetic even though I wrote this awhile ago...next assignment was to Korea but by choice and it was GREAT...see below<<).
Although I'm not making as much $$ as I would have as an engineer in the civilian world, I can't imagine anything else I'd rather be doing, even if I can't really talk about it (besides, I got promoted to 1st Lieutenant in May 2001, so that helped a bit)(>>Captain 2 yrs later<<). Everyone tells me I'll be in for the whole 20 yrs, but we'll just have to see about that...probably right though.
Unlike most of the other young officers I work with, I haven't gotten married yet (>>yup, still true<<), but am finally to the point where I'm ready (>>ummm, no not yet, changed my mind on that one<<)...just haven't been in the right place to find "her" if that makes any sense (>>true-ish<<).
As of April 24 2003, I will be assigned to Osan Air Base in the Republic of Korea (a.k.a., South Korea). I'll be there for a year and afterwards, it's off to who-knows-where. It was my first choice though, so I'm 2-for-2 as far as getting my first choice of assignment. I also get promoted to Captain right after I get there, on May 15, 2003...FINALY! (>>got the promotion, loved Korea, lived off base in my own little Korean house, got my first choice of jobs as I left Korea, so 3-for-3, one of the worst decisions I've ever made...lol).
(>>Korea was a blasst. Hard job and the building I worked in would most definitely have been target numero uno on North Korea's "list o'stuff to blow up" if we got into a shootin' match. How comforting for the family. It was a great time though. Ended up in Maryland afterwards, near my dad<<).
So that's about it, 5 yrs of school and 8 yrs and 1 month on active duty, then I'm out as of 1 July 07. I'll be running my own biz once I get out. Feel free to contact me and let me know what you've been up to. I'd love to play catch up.
