Kerry's Story

I left NY in 1978 and moved quite a bit. After 12 years with my own consulting firm and successfully day trading the stock market I "retired" Dec. 1998. Moved to Miami, FL to day trade the stock market full-time, but my luck changed (the stock market is a lot like VEGAS) and after 9 months I went back to consulting. I had to change the name from "The Davids Group, Inc." to "Davids Negron International, Inc." (added my Mother's maiden name) because a company in Florida already filed with a name similar to mine. Taught myself how to speak, read and write in Spanish (speaking Spanish is pretty much essential here) over the past four years. What's cool is that everyone asks if I am from Brazil because I speak with an accent of someone who first learned Portuguese and then Spanish (sure beats "You talk like a gringo!"). I still play a lot of instruments (6 and 12 string guitars, 4 and 5 string bass guitars, keyboards and have a complete latin percussion set) but instead of just playing progressive and classic rock (Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, etc., I expanded into different types of Latin music. I sing and play boleros from Los Panchos and old Cuban songs by Trio Matamoros, rock in Spanish by Mana, Luis Fonsi, Coti, Juanes and Polo Montanez and just for grins I throw in some bachata, merengue and salsa on bass guitar. I added a digital recording studio to my house and have a lot of fun with that (if I could just land a recording contract). I also DJ'ed and performed for some private parties (the parties were fun so it was almost like not working, except for lugging around the sound system). The economy took its toll on a lot of people and I have had to "adapt to survive." After working with UNIX, C and Shell for 30 years, in September 2009 I had to take Microsoft courses to get certified in C# and ASP.NET, SQL Server 2005 and SharePoint 2007. After getting an advanced certification in January 2010, I started teaching those course that February and became a Microsoft Certified Trainer in April. When I am not teaching I have to study to prepare for more certifications. In January 2011 I add more certifications for MCITP SQL Server 2008 and MCPD .NET Framework 4 Web Developer. After a couple of years of struggling, 2011 was been a turnaround year. From March until August I worked for a company that manufactured and configured software for intelligence operations communications systems (ie, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other places around the world). It was interesting work and paid well, but the old joke that "military intelligence is an oxymoron" is not a joke. ;-) Glad to no longer be part of that operation. In October I joined an IBM Global Services partner as Senior Informix Database Consultant and worked on some key projects at the Hilton Worldwide Operations Center in Memphis, TN. Memphis is a really nice place, but the airport is expensive to travel to and from. In the meantime, the IBM Global Services team got carte blanche at the Hilton Memphis (east side of town) and life could not be better. In August 2012 I started with a new IBM group at Hilton in Memphis at Hilton. Not quite as much travel, but I made Gold with Delta in June and Diamond with Hilton with my last visit. Life was still really good. 2012 was my best year in a log time. On November 13, 2012 I had LASEK PRK laser surgery on my eyes and can see pretty much 20/20 without glasses. For those of you that remember my glasses from high school, that's a relief. In Jan 2 2013 I moved to another project with IBM Global Services at at Wise Alloys in Muscle Shoals, AL. They are an aluminum recycling company that takes in scrap aluminum and manufactures huge aluminum coils that are then sold to large beer and soda companies to make cans and other products. While it meant that I had to catch a flight from Miami at 10:15 AM on New Year's Day which cut short my New Year's celebration, the project took me to a new career level. I was on a team that interfaced an Informix leg...Expand for more
acy database system with a new SAP enterprise system. A lot of work, the people were friendly, and the largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing was AWESOME. Because of the number of days stayed at the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa I went Gold and then Platinum with Marriott and they took good care of me. With the good consulting rate and paid extra hours life went to the next level. The IBM project ended August 9, 2013, but five days later I got a call from a recruiter for the same position that I had turned down in December to take the consulting project with IBM. I started working a full-time job in the IT Department of International Bonded Couriers, Inc - an international freight forwarding company, on August 21. 9/20/2013: Had a pacemaker installed to fix the accelerated atrial fibrillation. Should have done that at least two years prior. Definitely an improvement. 11/4/2013: Got an e-mail from the Microsoft Business Partner about teaching classes and started teaching Microsoft Developer Certification classes Monday - Thursday from 6-10 PM six weeks on, one week off. The hours are grueling, but the money is good. In July 2014 I realized that I had to start going to the gym in the mornings in order to have the energy to keep up with the schedule. Note that as of today (9/19/2015) I am still starting most days at the gym, working, and then teaching. 12/26/2013: Closed on the new house on 12/20. Moving stuff through the holidays. Pictures to follow. 3/16/2014: Finally married Sara Luisa (after being together for 8 1/2 years). 8/2/2014: Took Sara Luisa to St. Petersburg, FL for the weekend to see Yes at The Mahaffey Theater with the Meet and Greet package. Met the band after the concert and was able to shake hand and talk with my bass guitar hero, Chris Squire. UPDATE (8/21/2015): No changes. Still married, going to the gym, working the full-time job and teaching contract. I wish I had time to play my musical instruments, but even though the house has over 3000 sq ft the way it's laid out and with all of the new furniture there's no space for a "studio" like in the old house (granted, I had taken over the living room with all of my gear). 9/1-9/4/2015: Drove up to Orlando with Sara Luisa to go to Magic Kingdom and Epcot, but with the hot weather the best part was the shopping for her at the Orlando Premium Outlets on Vineland. As of July 2019 I am working from home most days and then my 9th year as a Microsoft Certified Trainer teaching Microsoft development and database certification classes Monday through Thursday 6-10 PM. Upgraded one of my certs to MCSE: Data Management and Analysis and will upgrade the other to MCSD: App Builder in the next month or so. The previous "Now" picture was taken September 9, 2018. After seeing the entire "Sons of Anarchy" DVD box set, I was inspired to take the Harley Davidson Riding Academy course over Veteran's Day weekend in 2017. I had never ridden a motorcycle before but I passed the riding test and scored 100% on the written exam. I then got the motorcycle endorsement added to my license but held off on a bike because Miami drivers are the WORST. The kutte is an exact replica of Jax Teller's kutte, but does not have the "MC" patch and put a "VETERAN" bottom rocker on the back to avoid pissing off the "1 percenters." The "Then" picture was my 22nd birthday Apr 14, 1978 at my parents' old house in Bay Shore.. Update for January 2021. I survived COVID-19 (so far). Took up fly fishing this summer and then learned how to tie my own flies. I have a YouTube channel dinoconsabor catching peacock bass (imported from the Amazon), largemouth bass, bream, and bluegill in the man-made lakes around my house. Now that the cold fronts have been passing through, the fish are deeper in the lakes (close to the center) and harder to reach. I am thinking about saltwater fly fishing, but it will have to warm up again for that, as well. 4/14/2021: Celebrated my 65th birthday. Added a photo with Sara Luisa to my Gallery.

Wednesday is in the books. Tomorrow up early for the gym, then work, and then pick up the pizzas for the class taking the SQL Server 2014 Data Warehousing Final Exam.
Another long day, but worth it. Thank goodness for Sinex to keep this cold under control. Tomorrow is the Microsoft Final Exam and pizzas for the class which means an earlier night and then Friday.
It was a ridiculously long work week, but thank goodness Sara Luisa and I could relax last night with her famous burritos and Patrón tequila. Time for the obligatory weekend shopping trips to Sam's Club and Costco.
