Kerry's Story

Life After high school, I went to San Bernardino Valley College, graduating in 1977 with an AA degree in Criminal Justice. Not quite ready for a career in law enforcement, I enlisted in the Army. I served for seven years, at Fort Hood TX and Frankfurt Germany, honorably discharged in 1984 as a sergeant. I got married in 1985, divorced in 1996. I have four children, three girls and a boy, ranging in ages from 27 to 34; I also have 3 grandchildren: 2 girls, ages 14 and 8, and a boy, 5. My son is autistic. I now work in San Bernardino as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. My oldest daughter graduated from high school in '05, is a US Army veteran, and now works for a tuxedo rental.. My other children moved to Georgia in July 2004; eventually, I'll go out there too. As of 2015, all my kids are in Georgia. In August 1993 I came down with a rather nasty disease: bacterial endocarditis. I was spiking fevers of 104-105. I was hospitalized for a week (in the hospital where I was working at the time), and off work for two months. I had a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) line in my arm and was getting IV antibiotics 3-4 times a day at home. That wasn't a lot of fun. Neither was having my mother--an LVN herself--change the dressing on my PICC...right after she smoked a cigarette! March 2016 I developed cellulitis in my leg, and missed work for a month. Thank God for disability insurance! In July 2020, I underwent 8 hours of open heart surgery to replace my mitral and aortic valves. My father died in 1997, and mother in 2003. My latest project is tracing my family tree, especially my mother's; her grandparents all came here from Sweden. School Biggest crush? I won't answer that here. I was rather shy in high school; I never dated, never went to the prom. I didn't have my first kiss until I was 20. Once, in my senior year, my father and I drove up to Lake Silverwood in the driving rain. Dad never learned to stop drinking beer, and we wound up flipping our van over. I was ejected thru the windshield, but my total injuries were a rather minor scratch on my hand. College Can't say much here. I went to SBVC, graduating in 1977 with an AA in Criminal Justice. I had my first exposure to the Scientology cult during this time. Dopey people would come up and say, "Hi! I'm Steve! Wanna rap?" While I was stationed in Germany, I took some classes thru the University of Maryland. My subject? German! Got straight A's, which was far better than the C's and D's I got at Colton fr...Expand for more
om Mr Bridges (LOL I even sent him a letter...auf Deutsch!) When I was discharged from the Army, I enrolled at CSUSB. But by this time I met my future wife (playing Dungeons & Dragons, no less), so my interest in school waned. Workplace For the past 25 years, I've worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at various facilities in the Inland Empire. I got into nursing a bit as an accident: got laid off! Well, my mom was an LVN too. Here I gear my life up to becoming a police officer...and I become a nurse instead. Go figure. My most fun job? Delivery salesman for Arrowhead Water Co. My route was in Hollywood, West Hollywood and Hollywood Hills. Whom did I deliver to? Check this list out: Pierce Brosnan (007 himself!), Jamie Lee Curtis, Martin Mull, Stephen Collins (7th Heaven), Sheena Easton, Peter Frampton (guitar god of the 70's), John Kay (Steppenwolf), Sela Ward, Bronson Pinchot, Kent McCord (Adam-12), Katie Sagal, Melanie Griffith. There are some others, both these were the biggies. Military I enlisted 30 SEP 77 in Los Angeles. Basic Combat Training was at Fort Jackson, SC, C-4-1. Advanced Individual Training was at Fort Devens, MA, at the US Army Intelligence School, MOS 05G Signal Security Specialist. My first assignment was HOC (HQ & Opns Co) 522d MI Bn 2AD, Ft Hood TX. I did a couple of trips to Ft Irwin (before it became the NTC). As I'm a resident of San Bernardino, this was very nice; even took a couple of sectionmates to Disneyland! I re-enlisted on 15 SEP 80 while on REFORGER 80, and was re-assigned to HHC 533d MI Bn 3AD, Frankfurt Germany. From one CEWI battalion to another. I went back to Devens in '83 for my Basic Tech Course; made Honor Graduate too. FEB 84 I went back to the 522d, and ETSd 14 SEP 84. I came home, and remained active in the USAR (Pasadena, 2 miles up the arroyo from the Rose Bowl), and the NG (HHT 1-18 Cav; I picked up 96B Intelligence Analyst as a SMOS--Iraq invaded Kuwait halfway thru the course). My big thing in the Guard was riot duty in Los Angeles. My four man team (which included a Santa Ana police officer and a future San Bernardino sheriff's deputy) patrolled in the vicinity on 6th and Alvarado on Cinco de Mayo. LAPD Rampart Division treated us like visiting royalty, and not just for the reason we were there: our team leader (the Santa Ana cop) used to be with Rampart. I got out totally in JUN 93. Now I delight in hearing my daughter's stories; another Zane serving our country with pride, a family tradition 300 years strong.
