Kevin's Story

Life Let's see. I graduated from Truman State in 1997 with a degree in English Lit. (which I never used). Better yet, they changed the name of the school from NMSU to Truman State the year I graduated. Therefore, not only was I armed with a useless degree, but one one which proudly displayed my matriculation at a school named after the only human being to launch an atomic attack on the human population. Packed up my things and decided to move to South Florida; primarily because A) I figured 'what the hell' (beaches and sun seemed like a good idea) and B) the prospect of remaining in MO any longer than I had to was mildly depressing. I did, however, stop by my old high school (Vianney) on the way down for an informal interview of sorts. Unfortunately, I don't think Vianney was too eager to take on a 21 year old faculty member (lol), so I left the Griffin parking lot and continued by 2,000 mile journey towards Florida. Florida was a rude awakening at first. It's basically a transient colony of New Yorkers and my Midwestern mind-set didn't really jibe with the roughshod "me-first-then-you" disposition of my fellow South Floridians. Plus, I had to get used to constant utilization of all mirrors on my car as you never know when a 95 year old blue-hair peering over the dashboard might slam into you with at 25 mph with their Cadillac Eldorado. I was broke like a joke after college. Tried to break into teaching in Florida, but the county was adamant about applicants possessing an MAE (unlike MO) and I really had no intention of spending another 1-2 years taking a slew of juvenile psych. and/or behavioral science courses (all so I could teach D.H. Lawrence to 13 year olds who wouldn't be paying attention anyway). Plus, knowing what I know now about South Florida's public school system, I probably would have been mowed down with an AK-47 on any given day :) Skipping ahead, I needed money so I went from one post-co...Expand for more
llegiate jerk-job to another until I stumbled upon a pretty interesting job with a metals company. Worked there for a couple years and then kind of fell into plastics commodities trading. I won't extrapolate that b/c on the off chance that anyone is actually reading this I'm saving you from lulling off into a boredom-induced coma which might cause you to slam your head against the desk and cause injury. Actually, I find it pretty interesting and it keeps me really busy. Basically, I harass unsuspecting buyers at plastics mfg. companies and sell them rail car tankers (trains) of thermoplastic resins. So, the next time you're at McDonalds and slugging down a 32 oz. Coke in an extrusion / thermoformed polystyrene cup, you can find solace in the fact that there is a little part of me with you - lol. So, that's the professional bio. Other than that, I'm just a pretty low-key dude. I live on a golf course which is kind of cool. I sneak out after they pull the pins and work on my short game. The weather is usually always nice. I've survived 2 major hurricanes without hurricane shutters, so I've got that going for me. Most of my buddies are married, getting divorced, thinking about divorce or busy shooting out children like Pez dispensers. All & all, I just kind of do my own thing. I like to run, read, go to the beach, travel a bit. Nothing too riveting. Pretty boring, huh? I pretty much only keep in touch with buddies from college. Haven't made it back to any reunions or anything like that, but I do my best to support felllow alumni. Made a concerted effort to go to a few Marlins / Phillies games when Cliff Polite was pitching for the Phillies and got to see him pitch a couple times. That was pretty cool and about as close to a HS reunion as I've gotten in 14 years - ha. Well, if you're reading this and I know you and you're ever in South Florida on business and want to play golf sometime (lol), drop me a line!
