Kevin's Story

A lot of time and distance has passed since SMSH! I still remember the many lessons that I took with me there to Alabama, the Marine Corps and now the ATF. Most of which were not in the classroom. However, nothing could have prepared me for the Corps any better than Sr. Jean! God Bless that woman! I still send her a Christmas card every year. The first thing I saw of Sr. Jean was the bottom of her high healed shoe as it kicked open the swinging door from the coat room. Evidently, a kid had mouthed off to her and used some pretty rough language - not a good thing with this old battle-ax! Well, you would think that Sr. Jean had her black belt in something the way she swooped the kid's feet out from under him and gave him a, well shall we say, "semi-soft but firm landing" right on his knees right in front of the Blessed Virgin statue! Her infamous stern finger, which was rumored to be made of iron, came a hair from this now humbled kid as she said, "Now YOU PRAY!!!¿ Quite the attention gainer and one that I always remembered. Needless to say there were really no discipline problems in her class and come to think of it, she hardly ever yelled. She was and still is very well respected. I also ...Expand for more
remember the many butt kicking I received by my classmates during recess and after school. It seemed everyone took turns. I went home many of days bleeding and balling to my father - a blinded Viet Nam Vet who gave me a his ear but no mercy. He started me on one hell of a training program and I found myself running on the icy streets of North Attleboro at 05:30 every morning. My dad said that he was not going to get involved and I think he even told the teachers to not give me any sympathy either. At one point I asked Sr. Jean for help and she told said, ¿You got to stand up for yourself man!¿ Finally, one day, I had enough and fought back! The kid, William Cody, and all the others who took turns and I latter became friends. By the way, I visited Sr. Jean in 2000. She was retiring soon and in her eighties. She gave me one of the biggest bear hugs I had ever had and even picked all 190 lbs of me off the floor! She attributed her strength to her one hour of calisthenics every morning right after morning prayers. That tough love and discipline is something I hope to pass on to my three kids (one now two years old, the other a year old, and one on the way) Semper Fi Sr. Jean and God Bless!
