Kim's Story

Life After graduation, Ed and I led the simple life, then in 1977 we were posted to Cold Lake, Alta. By then we had 2 little girls and Ed was now trained as an Airforce Photographer. We spent 8 years there, then Ed got a transfer to Ottawa! Talk about life changes...I was employed with the Family and Community Support Services and as we were the first support services program for military families in Canada, I spent a year in Cold Lake with 3 kids of our own, several foster children at various times as well as a program to develop and Ed travelled the world with so called "Important People". We moved back to Victoria in 1989 and have been happy ever after! Ed retired from the Military in 1998 but continues to work as a civilian photgrapher for DND. They say there is no life like it (Military) and I have to tell you that life has been full of great adventures! Ed has done several overseas tours and I have had the chance to travel to Europe twice to meet him and see the world! One of our favourite places to holiday is Costa Rica. We are planning an extended trip to Australia in 2010 as we have never been there before. I am currently working with Seniors at James Bay New Horizons and have never worked so hard or had so much fun at any of my previous jobs. I know exactly how I am going to behave when I get "old" although I am not sure that I will ever get old! I have learned that most of it is a state of mind and as long as I can keep my mind I will be fine. We have 4 wonderful grandchildren, 3 living upisland and one we do not see often as she lives in Ontario with her Mom. I have to tell you that having grandkids is a lot better than having real kids! and yes, they do get spoiled. Case in point, we took our Grandchildren to Disneyland last y...Expand for more
ear and have never taken our own children there. My parents still live in the same house they lived in when I was in high school. Both of them are "aging" and I find role reversal happening as I am sure most of us do. But we do what we have to and bless everyday for their love and support. One of the highlights of my past year was my nomination for the Govenor General Award in recognition of my volunteer work. The presentation was made on Jan 10, 2007 and it was a great together for family and friends. I have been fortuanate to stay in touch with friends that were important to me in high school and miss some of the ones I have lost contact with, so if any of you would like to reconnect, I look forward to hearing from you. Workplace I have had the opportunity to work in Social Services of a different kind. When we left Victoria and moved to Cold Lake, Alberta, I had the chance to be involved in the development of the Family and Community Support Services. This was the first military base to offer support services to military members and their families. We offered programs such as Daycare, Financial counselling, Homecare,Pre school, and many more. After proving that these programs actually aided the military members in their ability to maintain a stable family life actually helped them to be more productive in their careers we were then the pilot program for other bases across Canada and Europe to start their own programs. The programs are now called Military Family Resource Centres and have been very successful. I now live and work in Victoria. I have taken a different path and now work with seniors in an activity centre. This has proven at times to be very challenging yet rewarding. I plan on working for another 5 years and then retiring.
