Kim's Story

Life Life, in general, is crazy. I am a certified teacher and librarian. Weird fact...I have 12 nieces and nephews; none of whom are biologically related to me. Moved to WA in 1998. Found the best diabetes doctor around. Who else, but I, would find a Cardinals fan doctor with diabetes in WA state? My husband Scott just retired from the Navy. He's already gotten a new career started. Scott is also a Cards fan. We can't wait to go to the new stadium. We got our cat, Holli, just before Scott left on the 9 1/2 month deployment on the USS Abe Lincoln. She is definitely stubborn;just like her servants. We do have a son, Jeremy. Unfortunately, we didn't know he existed until after he was in heaven and I was in labor. YES, it happens. Life for us forever changed in May 2005. Two months prior, I had the "lovely" gyny exam. Gee the report said I had a large mass. Diabetes and unknown pregnancy do not mix. Education After high school, I went to Western Illinois University where I learned a whole lot more than just being a teacher. Some experiences and people are just better not to mention. I did learn to bowl while at WIU. Even worked in a bowling alley in Waukegan, where I happened to meet Scott. Teaching certification requirements are different in every state. I got my Washington certification with no issues, but there are different levels and more classes to take with each level. In my quest to keep my certification, I completed the Library Media Endorsement Program at the University of Washington. Now I'm qualified to do more than just read picture books in the library. As a librarian and a reader, I love meeting authors. Just a few that I've met: Lemony Snicket, Richard Peck, Louis Sachar, Jon Sci...Expand for more
eszka, Cal Ripken Jr, Kirby Larson, Debbie Macomber, Joanne Fluke, Marc Brown, and Gordon Korman. This list goes on... My focus is mainly the children's lit authors, but I like meeting others, too. Workplace After Western, I taught math in a dinky district in Knox County. Learned a lot there, like have an unlisted phone number. Moved to the north suburbs, worked at the bowling alley, subbed, worked in a car dealership, taught at a Catholic school, and even worked with the Adaptive Physical Education program at a nearby center. (Funny--I always hated PE) I even spent some time at Kohl's and Rainforest Cafe. I should have gotten a job at Great America since I only lived 5 minutes from there. Before I got my teaching certification in Washington, I worked as an educational assistant dealing with an autistic boy. He was a sweetie, but had his attitude. Since 1999, I move around to several schools in a local district. I prefer Guest Teaching (subbing) over having a permanent job. Less headaches and stress. I have gotten very picky about the jobs I accept after the many years of it out here. I prefer the middle school grades (6-8) and the library. The librarians fight over me when more than one needs to be gone at the same time. And yes, most of the kids are taller than I am. I did have a year-long stint as an elementary (K-5) librarian when my friend had to take a year off. We didn't know it was going to be that long. I seem to say this all the time, "We weren't like this. Were we?" There's no way Limestone or Herscher would have allowed the behavior and dress that I see today. Those of you who are parents...what do you think of then and now? What else is there??? Plenty, but I need some input.
