Kimberly's Story

Life I ended up doing the career thing with the military, retiring, and have set up a small Native American craft store in Saint Ignace MI. I always wanted to see the world, so after High School I entered the Army and was stationed in Germany. They paid for my college degree at Michigan State & I met/married my husband on Mackinac Island during a summer internship. After college I went into the Air Force as an officer in Intelligence. I spent most of my time overseas: Italy, Korea, Italy again, the Middle East and then shorter TDYs to Scotland, England, Germany (several times) Greece and other spots. We spent a long tour in the US, in Omaha at Offutt AFB, while I was on flying status. I took an early retirement with a slightly reduced pension as we had a baby towards the end and all the deployments & TDYs would mean I'd never see him. Way up in Upper Michigan, it's a lot slower than the cities and the air is cleaner. It's very beautiful with lots of trees and we live right across the road from Lake Huron. About the only thing I miss is seeing many friends from the old days as we are way too far for anyone to travel to visit conveniently. Since retirement, Vin & I finally made it to Alaska for about 3 weeks. We've done shorter trips to visit my sister & some friends over the years. Now, we are really tied down as Warren's mom is quite elderly and on oxygen. A lot of times I am split between the store, taking care of the house, and dividing time between Vin's home school (this year, 8th grade) and her nursing care. I took about 2.5 years of nursing courses, but wasn't able to get used to the blood. We are lucky enough to live in a place where people pay good money to take their vacations. We enjoy the area, and the wildlife, as well as swimming, hiking and camping. There are loads of rustic areas and trails to explore. ...Expand for more
The store also keeps us busy, open 7 days a week in the "season," which runs April-December. We used to go out more for dinners & movies, but have cut back quite a bit. I enjoy cooking and it's actually harder to find something out in the real world that I can't do a better job with in my own kitchen. The movies we see at home where people aren't coughing and hacking, and talking to the movie screen. I've grown to dislike phones of any sort, after 3 years in Italy without one. I REALLY despise cell phones altogether. It seens as if people watch too much TV and take these stupid reality shows for true life. But I do enjoy watching Seinfeld re-runs and the odd show here and there in the winter. I can go for long amounts of time without any TV at all. Also, I don't like the news shows much, especially when they go on and on about a single story. I find the internet to be much more efficient, where you can look at the world news and get much more information in a short period. I am more conservative over the years and some of my favorites include Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Reagan & even George Bush. I was doing home dialysis for an elderly patient back in 2001 when the Terrorists hit the World Trade Center and Pentagon. It was amazing to see fighter jets flying over the Mackinac Bridge in an effort to protect the structure. The quiet each morning, in the absence of Paul Fullerton's daily flight's to Mackinac Island gives one chance to reflect on how close we could've been to the end of everything, of life how WE know it. I enjoy the Lilac Festival on Mackinac Island each Spring, and the fall colors in early October. I love it after Labor Day when things settle down, but I do enjoy some of the characters who come here to shop. I enjoy my husband and my son and the little log cabin in the woods, where we live.
