Kristen's Story

Life After getting my BA in Creative Writing from FSU, I'm still in Tallahassee working for a legal editing company while I figure out what I want to do next. Actually, I know what I want to do, it's just taking the steps to get there that requires time and work. I'm currently in the running for a screenwriting fellowship with Disney/ABC which would require me to move to Los Angeles to study with industry professionals. My goal is to get a place as a staff writer on an established TV show, then one day get my own show produced. In the meantime, I've been writing freelance pieces and entering writing contests; I'm starting to build up a nice little stack of rejection letters, but hey...that's what it takes! School It was fun, but I wouldn't go back and do it again if you paid me a million dollars! College I went in...Expand for more
to Florida State as a Theatre major and came out with a degree in Creative Writing. And while I did minor in Theatre, I'm not sorry I changed my mind. Being in the School of Theatre taught me that while I love it, it's a vicious, superficial lifestyle that I don't have the energy or inclination to pursue as a career. Still, I made friends, made memories and learned a lot about lighting design, costume history, play analysis and what to do if the fire alarm goes off during the first act of "Hamlet." The English department is where I truly fit in. My grades rose, I found teachers that I loved and even more friends. I took poetry and fiction, playwriting and essay classes. I was asked to join the staff of the undergrad literary magazine, and I was handpicked by award-winning poet Barbara Hamby to be in her workshop one summer.
