Kristina Johnson's Story

Life Well, I have been a married lady for 11 years - seems like about three weeks. John and I have so much fun together. In January of 2011 John and I became parents to two little boys - one 2 1/2 and the other on 4 - through adoption. Our sons have amazed us as we have become a family. They came to us scared and frail, lacking basic toddler vocabulary or skills. Now, what a wonderfully different picture - both boys are loving school - we homeschool them. They have been studying violin for almost 3 years - violins come as small as 1/16th size - and that is where we started with our littlest son. Both boys love the rural life - they came from a metropolitan city, but now they are not fond of any town bigger than Cheyenne. The last 4 years have been a medical challenge for our oldest son - and will continue to be for the foreseeable future because he is on peritoneal kidney dialysis and has been since one month after we brought the boys home. Yes, we knew the medical history and yes, we chose to adopt a child with kidney disease. John spent 10 1/2 years on kidney dialysis and is a living donor kidney transplant recipient and I had helped with dialysis for my cousin when I was in college so we are quite comfortable dealing with all that goes into dialysis. Before you thnk -oh, no! - our oldest son is one of the healthiest and most normal kids - he doesn't act or look sick. Last month, he convinced us to allow him to start ballet in January . . . .We are truly enjoying the journey. (And I know several of you are shaking your heads at two things: First - married and second - children.) Work I am working as a term intermittant park guard at Fort Laramie National Historic Site - I feel so priviledged to work in and help protect a place I have loved all my life. I also teach CPR, First Aid and coordinate Emergency Medical Techinican Classes. Home John and I live where I grew up - on the 80 acres my parents had near Wheatland. We try to sustainably produce meat, milk and produce . . . some years, lately, that is a true challenge. At the moment we have 6 female registed Milking Shorthorn cows and heifers and one bull and I am STILL buying milk. Also sharing the barn are sheep, chickens, geese, turkeys, a burro, a horse that we keep for friends and 3 adult pigs plus the latest litter of piglets. We have two border collies and a stock dog/lab cross that is a sweetheart, but useless at herding if a bird flies over. Keeping us mouse free are Fur-Fur and Muffin. (12/20/2014) Update written on 11/27/21: Seven years have sped by……… My beloved John died of a heart attack/cardiac arrest on February 16, 2016. He collapsed in the kitchen here at home. I started CPR immediately, but as is a frequent outcome, he did not recover. The boys were here and of great help. They knew exactly what I needed, where to find it and how to help. Because of suddenly becoming a single mom, critter keeper and solo homeschool teacher, I resigned my job at Fort Laramie NHS in July of 2016. Later in July of 2016, our older son had a major lung surgery, of 6.5 hours, to remove encapsulated aspergillis and the upper right lobe of his lung. He recovered rapidly and his lung function and lung issues were dramatically impr...Expand for more
oved……..one more layer of illness resolved with the hope of resolving enough issues to allow for a successful kidney transplant in the future. In October of 2016, Lenny Noyce, who was John’s best friend and is the boys’ Godfather, and I began dating. We were married on December 24, 2017 on the porch of Quarters A (the white duplex) at Fort Laramie NHS. It was a cold crisp afternoon with a fresh snowfall from the day before and absolutely no wind blowing………a beautiful day with a single deer track in the snow from the Laramie River to the porch. Since our marriage, Lenny has fallen in love with the land, views and critters that make up Hilltop Farm. We have 10 Milking Shorthorns and…….I am still buying milk! We no longer have pigs. We have two Columbia ewes that Lenny enjoys shepherding. Our hen house is full of hens and they keep us in eggs. My guys eat a dozen eggs for breakfast. Our older son’s kidney issues deteriorated enough that he was changed from peritoneal dialysis, which we could do nightly here at home, to hemodialysis which had to be done at the Kidney Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado three days a week. Lenny and our older son made that long trip every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from May 2020 to February 2021. They put in 10 hour days-travel time each way plus 4.5 hours at the Kidney Center.and put 34,311 miles on Lenny’s pickup. Our younger son and I didn’t go with them. We stayed here, taking care of the critters. Our younger son is a good hand with the critters and a excellent farmstead driver. We did have fun with all that. Who knows, he may be the next critter keeper and steward of Hilltop Farm. I hope so. On February 6, 2021, our older son received a kidney transplant. Everything has gone very well post transplant. He has grown 5 inches since February. We are settling into not having the guys on the road -what a nice feeling to have everyone home most of the time and healthy, finally. Our long awaited “best day” -the kidney transplant was another family’s “worst day ever” when their 20 year old son died………and they, on that worst day, made the decision to donate his organs, for which we are so thankful as the kidney match was extremely good. We think often of their gift to us and to several others in their time of great sorrow. Now that we are a normal family, I sometimes think we are only chauffeurs for the boys. Our older son is dancing in Advanced Ballet, Irish and Jazz classes and takes flute lessons. I teach our younger son clarinet. He is into the technical aspects of theater and dance so he does spend a bit of time before dance recitals on spotlight set up and practice. Both boys are in 4H Shooting Sports with our older son more fond of archery and our younger son placing 5th in the state in muzzle loader. I got them into a 4H Service Project where they each had to make two pillow cases.. it was a good introduction to sewing. Our younger son won Grand Champion Intermediate Sewing Construction at County Fair. Our older son became intimately acquainted with the seam ripper. Both boys love swimming and spend as much time at the local pool as possible. They both take swimming lessons all summer and spend as many afternoons as possible in the pool.
