Kurt's Story
I grew up between Plymouth and Boston, coming to Leigh in San Jose in 1964. After Leigh I majored in Saxophone and Clarinet at San Jose State College - 11 years, and also studied Flute and Oboe.
Mostly I have run my music stores. Originally near State in downtown San Jose, and later nearly 30 years simultaneously in Saratoga and Santa Cruz. Now I am in my dream location in Monterey. I have been honored to have had a great faculty, including Dr Claude Gordon, world's foremost brass teacher, for 8 years and Steve Adelstein world's foremost oboe teacher for over 20. We've also had Carl Leach from the Kenton Band teach brasses and Joan Butterfield from the Dallas Symphony teach flute.
Some other work I have done is to teach wind instruments at Bethany Bible College and UCSC, and back up Gospel Singers on the TV broadcasts at Faith Temple (now Cathedral of Faith) in San Jose and worked with the College and High School kids there. I'll always be grateful that Carolyn Dunstan, Elayne Moore, Dieter Schlaepfer and Jon Baldwin led me to Chri...Expand for more
st when I was at Leigh!
Along the way I was invited to a new college at Oxford, Played 8 seasons with the Hastings Symphonic Band in Santa Cruz then bought the band to save it. We are looking for sponsors for concerts or regular seasons.
With the decline of quality in wind instrument making, I was approached to design and make good instruments again. Now I am making Saxophones, Flutes, Trumpets, etc. in Monterey.
It has been wonderful working with many dozens of famous musicians. I'll never retire. I mentor students through college and am training some young fellows to become great makers some day.
I hope some of you stop by at 512 Polk St in Monterey. I don't do mornings, but am often there quite late.
If you search Kurt Sax Space you can read about one of my students and our project of putting the first real instrument in space. (There had been a tiny harmonica before) Since then there have been two more saxophones, three flutes, a keyboard and a guitar, but the first real instrument in space came out of Saratoga!
God Bless all!
