LaDawn's Story
Life
I have three daughters, and I live in California. I love it here.
I still write sometimes, and still dream of publishing someday, but I'm more likely to post a blog than to sell a novel. I've been involved with our local NAMI chapter and advocating for more services for teens and special needs adults. I've become very comfortable with people who experience the world in different ways whether because of her physical, mental, or emotional struggles. I like to say differently "abled" because sometimes they have disabilities, it is sometimes extra sensitivity, or extra-sensory that makes life so different and so unique for them. I hope that the stories I collect will someday help share their visions. In the meantime I hope that my ability to listen helps them to feel more connected, and more human, and if that's all I have to offer, then that's enough.
School
Lets, see, high school memories ... I don't think about it much. I have half a yardstick that Mr. Rutter broke on his podium while keeping us awake in class. I don't know why 20 years later I still have a broken yardstick, but I do remember Creative Writing meaning a lot to me. I remember Mr. Rutter shutting the door so as not to attract the attention of the administration while we read Jean Paul Sarte's "No Exit", a play "which tells the story of a demoniacal lesbian, a spoiled society woman, and a cowardly journalist who find themselves trapped in Hell." I remember being in my own sort of hell, and not sure that I'...Expand for more
d be able to go home. Before I made that fateful step that may have resulted in homelessness for me, I talked to Rutter and he assured me that if things went badly I could stay with him. Maybe that's why I still have a broken yardstick in my office.
I remember hating P.E. but for some reason one semester a friend of mine and I decided to push each other and I actually ran an eight minute mile. The look on my face was surprised, but the look on Coach Cusick's face was priceless. Mostly I remember wondering aimlessly waiting for someone else to save me, and finding out that just like in the Wizard of Oz, the power was always within. I wasted a lot of time, missed a lot of experiences, and can only hope my girls will take me seriously when I tell them, "I hope you dance." (courtesy of Lee Ann Womack).
College
After high school graduation I attended BYU for one semester then headed to Washington DC where I was nanny for a Jewish family. It was a wonderful experience to live on the east coast and I made a lot of new friends. Since then I've attended Red Rocks Community College, University of Colorado, University of Phoenix, and Santa Barbara Business College.
Workplace
I used to do tech support for Novell in Provo. I loved the company and they were very generous with me. I survived several lay-offs, but I was tired of trying to fix computer problems all the time. I left Novell in 2002 to stay home with the kids. Now I work for Ultimate Software as a Data Conversion Specialist.
