Lance's Story
Life
July 27, 2007, I was married to a wonderful (naturally) lady, Ann, I met on a cruise a few years ago, when her husband, Bob, was still alive. A condolence call led to more conversations and, eventually, frequent-flier miles; so we decided we might as well just get married. We have just (9/08) moved from California to my hometown in northwest Connecticut. After 40+ years away from Winter and snow, I'm finding the change "invigorating."
School
Hotchkiss provided a superb education, and for that I am ever grateful. It also made me extremely concerned with ethical issues, an interest that I have pursued throughout my work life. I do wish, however, that I had been able to attend it at a time after it had become co-ed. I really needed that social contact during my adolescence.
College
Brandeis University; then Stanford Law for a year (wrong time for school; so off to Navy O.C.S.). Upon return from the service an M.A. in English and a year towards a doctorate, when I decided to do law school after all -- at the Univ. of San Diego (I was working at UCSD at the time). After 25 years as a Dep. D.A. in San Jose, I went back to school again (Must like it, huh?) at the Church Divinity School o...Expand for more
f the Pacific (part of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley) and got an MDiv in May, '05, preparing for ordination to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, which took place September 10, 2005.
Workplace
The significant jobs I've had are, first, Coordinator for Selective Service Affairs for the nine-campus University of California during the VN war, making me the head draft counselor among other things, and then, 25 years as Dep. D.A., the last half of which, instead of prosecution, I represented abused and neglected children who had been taken from their parents. At least in part because of that experience, I retired and attended the Episcopal seminary in Berkeley. I'm now officially a canon at Trinity Cathedral, San Jose, though I serve primarily at St. John's, Salisbury, Connecticut. I do go back to San Jose from time to time, though, when the weather prompts me to do so.
Military
Other than schools, my time was spent in two places only -- Keflavik, Iceland, and Moffett Field, California. I think I'd have loved to have spent more time in Iceland -- if only it weren't in the Navy. Keflavik was a pretty dreary place, but the rest of the island was both interesting and beautiful.
