Larry's Story
Oh my, haven't modified this for well over a year. I serve our town as the municipal judge, and am trying to retire (again) from a law practice focusing on probate and estate planning.
We're now back in Thayne, Wyoming, returning from our adventure as missionaries in Palmyra, New York. We served as guides at historical sites there, where The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the"Mormons") began in 1830.
Our earlier missions were in Hong Kong (2011-12) and New Jersey (2005-2007). In Hong Kong, I served as the Associate Area Legal Counsel for the Asia Area, which stretches from Korea to Pakistan and Mongolia to Indonesia. I worked with attorneys in these countries as we represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Perhaps the most rewarding work deals with humanitarian projects. I've reviewed agreements to place hundreds of wheelchairs, train a local doctors and build water systems. A water system can change the dynamics of an entire village. The family has more water than a woman can carry. Girls are free to attend school, and mothers can help with the farm or get a micro-loan for a small business. We are also helping families to start gardens. Gardens feed families, so money from their main crop isn't eaten up buying food. If you're a member of our faith who has donated to the Humanitarian Fund, thank you! As missionaries, Ida Beth and I donated our time and paying our own expenses to be here, and so are the many humanitarian missionaries fanned out across Asia. They are like us, retired people who could be home with their grandchildren, but have elected to serve inste...Expand for more
ad. There's really no overhead here, so every dollar goes right to those in need. Again, THANK YOU for your help.
Hong Kong is a fascinating place, a very modern and vibrant city. I think Hong Kong and Star Valley are about the same size -- 400 square miles or so -- but there are 7 million people there, and about 10,000 in Star Valley. The sidewalks and streets are crowded, but the people are universally polite. Most people here speak English, partly because this was ruled by Great Britain until 1997, when it was turned back to China. When we were there, China's policy was "One country, two systems." Free enterprise was allowed, as well as a reasonably free society with genuine elections. It's so sad to see the People's Republic of China miserably turn away from the treaty obligations which guaranteed fifty years of freedom, or until 2047!!
Now, the old stuff for those who haven't read about us before:
I've now been a lawyer for 50 years, but retired in 2005. Most of my career was in litigation, but I spent the last 15 years supervising some of the environmental litigation that involved the Air Force. I covered the western third of the United States, including Guam. I spent so much time on airplanes that I didn't even own a pair of lace-up shoes 'til I retired.
Ida Beth and I served an earlier mission in Cape May, New Jersey. We then returned to my wife's home, Star Valley, Wyoming, where we built a house that's surrounded on three sides by her family's ancestral ranch. It's really bigger than you'd want to heat or keep clean, but "if you build it they will come" -- speaking of grandchildren.
