Laura's Story
Life
Married for 39 years, was an educator in Texas and Virginia for 30 years. I retired May 2008, but I did not stop working. I own a small business called Teacher's Emporium. We sell educational supplies. I am, also, providing services such as tutoring, piano lessons, parent consultations, and assessment services. I was an educational diagnostician the last four years of my first career. Attended SWTSU (Texas State), UWF, and TAMUK (Texas A&I) to obtain a masters degree+40 hours. I play the piano for my church and work in the children's department on Wednesday evenings.
We built a new house before I retired. Smaller than our other homes (I do not want to clean house for the rest of my life). We built a pool and I spend a great deal of time working in the yard - I inherited part of my grandmother's green thumb.
We went to Florida this winter to spend a week. We visited with some of my husband's old Navy buddies who have retired and live in Florida year round. Even in the winter, Florida is beautiful and like South Texas has plenty of sunshine. I have to be extremely careful thes...Expand for more
e days about the sunshine though as I have had two bouts with basal cell carcinoma - the "sun" cancer.
School
I didn't have a crush on anyone in high school until my senior year. I was too busy with studies, the piano, church, 4-H, and Rainbow Girls to be worried about socializing. Getting a good education was important to me because I wanted to please my father and make him proud. My father believed education and religion were the most important things an individual could be involved with. I have always had a good sense of humor and I could play pranks without any reservation. One of the funniest events to me occurred in Austin at a Future Teacher's of America convention when some girls bet I wouldn't walk up to the front podium in this convention center. So the announcer called someone else's name, I stood up, started walking to the front, and the spotlight was shining on me - it shined until I just ducked out of sight and slid into an empty seat - the operator was looking for me - couldn't find anyone - that was funny and the whole coliseum was roaring with laughter - it was great!
