Laurie's Story
Life
I've been travelling and living in so many places, my life never has been settled for a long period of time in the past 10 years. I lived in Australia for nearly 3 years. I'm just starting to have a "normal" life here in the Midwest. I don't have any children, but I am planning in the next few years to adopt a special needs child. It's been a tough road for me, but I finally have "made it". I am a pediatric occupational therapist working with infants and toddlers.
School
It's just interesting that Mr. Pedgrift and I followed each other for many years. When I was at SRJC, he taught at SRJC. When I was at Sonoma State, he taught at Sonoma State. When I worked for the City of Santa Rosa, he was mayor!
Workplace
I've been working for many years to get my masters degree in Occupational Therapy. I even went to the University of Sydney in Australia for almost 3 years. I am finally w...Expand for more
orking as a pediatric occupational therapist. My current caseload is about 16 two year olds and two preemie infants that weigh less than 5 lbs. at 3 months old. I couldn't afford to live in Sonoma County after returning from Australia, so I live in rural Michigan, near the Michigan/Indiana state line. The rents are cheap and the job outlook is good. I've adjusted to the Midwestern life.
I was in Sonoma County for a long time working with the disabled, from teenagers to adults. I ran the Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks Developmentally Disabled program for many years. I worked for Easter Seals and other organizations doing many different kinds of jobs working with mostly school age and teens with severe disabilities for many years.
I am hoping in a few years though to return to Australia to work. I fell in love with the country and people. Living there was the best experience of my life.
