Laurin's Story

I was raised in the San Francisco area until my mother died as the result of a car accident in 1961. At that time, I was in the 8th Grade at Hogan Jr. High School in Vallejo, CA, and my brother, Stan Peterlin, was attending Vallejo High School. My brother and I had to move to Alhambra to live with our father & step-family. I entered high school in the 9th Grade and attended AHS 1961-1965, and then CSULA (BA English/Drama & Secondary Teaching Cred. English). Then trained in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute in L.A. I have had careers in the Fashion Industry, Marketing, Advertising & PR fields, and spent 18 years as a Legal Asst./Paralegal (to 2004). Developed and ran my own businesses in Resume Writing, Glitz Body Jewelry & Real Estate Investing. I have no children, but, rather, rescued hundreds of cats while I lived in the San Fernando Valley, and did my mothering in that way. I find that animal welfare was my soul purpose in this life. It has brought me vast amounts of pain, but with some measure of satisfaction, giving them a second chance to live their lives. I sold my home in North Hills/Northridge in 2004 to move back to Northern California, after 43 years of being away. I now live in God's Country in the area east of Sacramento called Camino/Apple Hill, off Hwy. 50, which is past Placerville, directly on the way to South Lake Tahoe. This is known as the Gold Country, where historic Hwy 49 runs north & south. My husband, Michael, and I divorced at the end of 2007. I then opened my little specialty gift shop called Angels and Animals, in the historic gold rush town of El Dorado, south of Placerville. Right now I'm perfecting my ability to sell off the items I've collected over the years at garage & estate sales, on eBay, and have achieved the level of Top-Seller. I live with my 3 bunnies and 4 cats in the mountains where we get some snow in the winter, at 3,400 ft. I am a member of Sierra Wildlife Rescue, known for rescuing the wild critters that are abandoned or hurt. Also a member of the Goldhounds, a serious gold prospecting group that actually finds MAJOR gold. I have a metal detector, and hope to become more active with that. The history here is mind-boggling and so interesting! And I hated history so much at AHS!!! I took an interesting trip to Slovenia (formerly Yugoslavia) in September, 2008, where my father's parents were from. It's right next to Italy, Croatia, Germany and the Austrian Alps. nian genealogic group back east organized the trip, coordinating with the genealogy group in Slovenia. Not only did we see much of the country, we were able to do research in the written records for birth, death, marriage and land documents that included the names of our relatives. I met 2 Peterlin families, though they probably aren't directly related to my family. After returning home, I was contacted by the genealogy group to establish a California Chapter for the Slovenian Genealogy Society International. I will be looking for any Slovenian people in No. and So. California, to become new members, to encourage their search for their past in the old country. In September, 2009, I took my first cruise to visit the Mediterranean areas. I had been there 40 years ago, but wanted to rekindle my interest in seeing Europe as much as I can, while I can. Right now I have zero social life, as a single person, so I participate in the many interesting events going on around here, and keep very busy with eBay. I hope to find a new partner/companion to share my life with, when the time is right. My plans are to sell this house by 2011, and buy a bigger place with acreage. You can buy very well here from $250K on up, with land, ponds, streams, oaks & pines, and all the critters you can imagine. I've discovered I'm really a country girl at heart, and am very much at home here. My brother lives up north of Redding in a small town called Dunsmuir. His son, Paul, and family, live north of me in Penn Valley outside of Grass Valley, and his other son, Marcus, lives in the San Ramon with his wife. After so many years, I'm finally around my family again, and it feels so good. I'd love to reconnect with any old friends who would like to be in touch. I just signed in to the Communities of Hogan Jr. High School and Vallejo High School, where some of my friends would have gone, so if any members remember me or my brother, please feel free to contact me. You can reach me at my e-mail address. The system won't let me give it directly, so I'll spell it out: lapcats at internet 49 dot com. That should do it. By the way, when I was at Cal State L.A., I applied for a birth certificate so I could travel, and found out that my real name was Laurin, and that Laurie was a nickname. I took back my given name then and there, and have used it ever since. I always know when someone knew me prior to that, because I'm known as Laurie to them - including my family!
