Lavant's Story
Paramount HS Class of '81. Attended UCLA and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in '86. While I was there, I was President of the UCLA Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, was on the helmet crew for Rally Committee (the large helmet on the football field), and was treasurer of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Did some grad school at CSULB, but didn't finish (two classes and a thesis). Worked for Rockwell International's Space Program from '86 - '98 in Downey, CA, then worked for Boeing in Huntington Beach on the Shuttle Program from '98 - '01. Was able to climb around the Shuttles, mainly Endeavor, Columbia, and Discovery, so sat in the Crew Cabin and walked in the payload bay. Left Boeing when I declined to move to Houston or Florida, and was hired by the FAA in Engineering Services as part of the Infrastructure Platform. We design and oversee construction projects that include Air Traffic Towers (I was on staff for the Towers at Phoenix, North Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon), and smaller projects involving power upgrades, lightning protection, and HVAC of FAA sites (such as long range radars and communication sites) in the Western Service Area, which includes the States of California, Nevada, Arizona, and all the Pacific Islands (Hawaii, Guam, Americ...Expand for more
an Samoa, Saipan, etc.). Usually when on travel, the typical length of projects are from projects lasting anywhere from 3 weeks to 5 months. In 2019, I was selected to manage the Infrastructure Platform's field engineers. As such, I don't travel as much or as long.
The picture on my profile is in front of a taxi while I was on assignment in Guam.
Still live in Southern California where my parents still reside in Paramount. Married my childhood sweetheart (met her in 3rd grade) who attended my HS prom. Have two children, one who just graduated from the University of Chicago and the other just graduated from San Francisco St., where he was recruited to play soccer for the university (he decided he wanted to just be a student).
Played basketball, including a stint for UCLA's JV team in 1982 (they selected the team but cut the program). Played until hamstring problems started making it hard to continue when I was in my 40's. Still enjoy coaching (mainly soccer), skiing, and I volunteer as the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer for the UCLA Black Alumni Association (2008 - present).
Middle brother Lorenzo (C/O '84) is married with 4 kids living in Palmdale. Youngest brother Michael (C/O ' 86) passed away Christmas Day in 2019, leaving his wife and 3 kids - they reside in Long Beach.
