Lawrence's Story

April, '09 Well, let's see...After high school, I went to the left coast for several years (Los Angeles) and graduated from the University of Southern California. While I missed the change of seasons of New England, I soon realized that California had 4 seasons, too - Fire, Flood, Earthquake, and Mudslide. After several years of living with smog, I decided to move back east... There's a saying in Los Angeles about people from the northeast, "The umbilical cord never quite gets cut,...just stretched a bit. Ultimately, most of them make their way back east." Well, I don't know if that's true or not, but I will admit that I did miss the lack of pretentiousness the east coast had to offer. (Maybe it's that New York influence...) In 1987, I met a girl from Westport that I would ultimately marry five years later in 1992. A Staples High and Fairfield U. graduate, she gave me the greatest birthday present anyone could ever ask for! On my 35th birthday (November 28, 1994), we had a beautiful, red-headed baby girl! Delivering my daughter that day had to be the single, greatest event of my life! Quite by accident, my sister Nancy (RLHS '74) happened to be in the delivery room for our monumental occasion,...so I guess she qualified to later become my daughter's godmother. We bought a rambling, antique colonial in the Stratfield/Brooklawn section in 1995, and I am still there today. Like most homeowners, you are constantly finding that there is always something that needs to be repaired/replaced. When my wife unexpectedly passed away in 2005, I found myself looking in the mirror at a 46-year-old guy who was too young to be a wid...Expand for more
ower. My daughter and I have since become very involved with a bereavement support group involving children who have suffered the loss of a parent. It really has turned out to be a great help these past couple of years. My daughter is now an honor roll student and a freshman in high school. While many classmates have left the Fairfield area long ago, I consider myself lucky to have witnessed all of the many changes that have occurred here over the years. Some have been good, some not, but all of them have reflected how much Fairfield has grown. I often think about how foreign Fairfield must now look to people who left town in the 70's or the 80's. Even my parents, who sold their house in 1997 and retired to Florida (after 51 years in Fairfield), would hardly recognize some things. (They are both 84 and will be celebrating their 61st anniversary next month. Also, Mom was RLHS '43 when it was located in what is now Tomlinson.) Despite all the changes, I still come to the same conclusion when I look at downtown Fairfield...I truly have been blessed to have grown up here. March, '17 Well, eight years have passed and the Class of '77 is looking at its 40th reunion. I'm happy to be on the committee helping to organize this event and even happier that we are opening up this year's event to include everyone who was ever a part of our class, regardless of whether they graduated or not! Ricky Lavrado, Tom Lincoln, Janice Zavatsky, John Rossignal, and so many others are expected to attend! I hope we can find everyone! It sounds like it's going to be a great time - June 24, 2017 at the Gaelic American Club, Beach Rd, Fairfield!
