Leah May's Story
Life
Hi,
CLASSMATES
My Profile
I'm Leah May Feinstein now, but my maiden name was Kauffman.
I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but moved to Detroit, Michigan, when I was 6.
I went to Alger Elementary School and, later, to Hutchins Intermediate. In 1942, I graduated from Northern High School. Then, in September of that year, I enrolled at Wayne State Univ., completing my freshman year the following June.
World War II was happening, and my mom had the best paying job she had ever had, so she decided to stay in Detroit, while I was sent to California, to live with an aunt. I was 18.
After working for a year in a civil service job with the United States Navy, The Assistant Supervisor of Ship Building, I went back to school, to UCLA, the University of California, at Los Angeles. I received an AA in 1944.
In 1946, after the war ended and my special serviceman, a war cor- respondent with "Stars and Stripes, Pacific Edition," came home, we married. We had four children and thirty happy years together. My wonderful husband died, however, in 1976, a year after I had finally graduated from CSULA, wi...Expand for more
th a BA in English and a secondary teaching credential. After completing the necessary postgraduate work and student teaching, I was employed at South Gate Junior High School. Three years later, I was sent on to South Gate High School, where I taught English for the following 14 years. In 1994, thankfully, I could retire.
I have 10 grandchildren now and 4 adorable great-granddaughters. My four adult children are all in their fifties with their own children to raise.
I am enjoying retirement immensely, in a lovely home in southern California, with my two great pets: Buster, a 4-year old German Shepherd/ mix, and Emily, a l3-year old tabby. The two of them get along fine, and they are wonderful companions for this elderly lady.
So I have my family, friends, home, and pets, and can enjoy gardening, movies, TV, books, etc. I have fond memories of my high school years and my Detroit friends, many of whom I e-mail. I wish more of them belonged to Classmates. Finally, I'm glad to still be alive. In May, 2005, I'll be 80! Wow!
