Lee's Story
Currently single, I have been married and divorced twice and have had a few insignificant and significant relationships. The greatest passion in my life (now that I am retired) are my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I have three children (a Daughter age 59, a Son age 44, and a Son who passed away in 2003 at age 38), five Grandchildren (33, 31, 24, 16, and 9 years), and four Great-Grandchildren (ages 10, 9, 5, and 1 year). To watch them grow and flourish continues to be the most amazing of my life's experiences.
I married the love of my life, Doris, the Mother of my children in March 1974. We were married for 12 years, and though we were divorced, we remained very close friends until the time of her death in April 2004.
I now live in a Senior Resident Facility in Westbrook, having lived in Portland for the most part since I was 12 years old. I have previously lived in Windham, Westbrook, and South Portland, Maine, as well as Chicago, IL, Pensacola, FL, Philadelphia, PA, and Norfolk, VA, while on active duty with the US Navy. It seems no matter where I go, I always return home to the "Grand State of Maine," the "Greatest Place on Earth."
During my high school years, I think I would be most remembered for being quiet, studious, smart, and well-dressed; in other words, a "geek." I pretty much kept to myself until the 11th and 12th grades in high school. I was in the cadet corps and had a walk-on role in the senior class play "A Portrait of Jenny"! The wildest thing I remember doing in high school was smoking in the boy's restroom. Other than that, I was pretty quiet, reserving the "wild times" for much later in my life! I was a member of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) during my junior and senior years of high school and worked in the Engineering Office of the City of Portland, Department of Public Works where I continued to work, after graduating from high school, until 1977; both as an Engineering Technician and as Administrator of Payroll Systems.
I served in the US Naval Reserve from 1968-71 and on active duty in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and Personnel Associate at the Pensacola Naval Hospital in Pensacola, FL, from 1971-73.
Following my time with the City of Portland, I served as Operations Manager for Federal Savings and Loan (Sun Savings and Loan) (1977-79), as Communications Associate and Operating Room Manager at Brighton Medical Center (1979-83), and as Associate and Executive Director of the Children's Museum of Maine (1983-86). In 1986, I went to work for the University of Southern Maine's Department of Community Programs, which later became the USM Center for Continuing Education (CCE). It was there that I discovered a career in non-traditional college education and training that would become my professional passion for 20 years. I served in a variety of administrative positions, including Administrative Assistant, Data Processing Coordinator, Program Coordinator and Instructor for CCE's Computer Training Center, and finally, as Administrative Systems Manager for the Division Public Service at USM. In 2003, I was appointed to "The Madison Who's Who of Technology Training Professionals" and in 2005 to "The Cambridge Who's Who for Continuing Education Professionals."
In 2006, I took advantage of USM's early-retirement program to devote my time and energy to my web-design and technology consulting business, and lastly, offering peer counseling ...Expand for more
as a peer counselor, finally retiring in 2009, following major health issues.
Over the years, I have served as president of the Windham PTA (1981-83), president of the Maine State PTA (1983-85), and as a member of the Board of Directors for the National PTA (1983-85). While at USM, I served as president of the Classified Staff Union (1986-89), member and chair of the Classified Staff Senate (1989-91), member of the Professional Staff Senate (1999-2001), and as membership chair of the Professional Staff Union (2005-06).
As a gay man who knows first-hand the many indignities and injustices of bigotry, discrimination, and hate - I worked on the "Vote NO on 1" campaign to "Protect Maine Equality," which finally passed by state-wide referendum (53% to 47%) in November 2009. I continued to volunteer for numerous local, state, and national political campaigns and several community-based personal, professional, political, and social nonprofit organizations. My greatest volunteer experience was as a peer counselor and lecturer for men who were; survivors of child abuse and neglect, recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, living with or affected by HIV, and for those living with debilitating mental illnesses.
I have traveled to 46 of the 48 contiguous states of the USA, as well as Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. My favorite past-times are computers, reading, writing, crocheting, and listening to music. I enjoy the outdoors, especially camping, hiking, walking, and white-water rafting.
As I begin the next leg of my journey in life; I look forward to many, many years of enjoying my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; watching
If I had to name one person as the "HERO" in my life, it would have to be Dr. Alex Tanous; world-renowned Parapsychologist and Psychic. I met Alex in 1986 through our educational journeys at USM. We became fast and close friends! Alex was my mentor and spiritual guide; his insightful guidance and advice pointed me on the path to my Destiny in the Universe. Alex passed-away in 1991 of pancreatic cancer, and through it all, he continued to counsel, not only me but hundreds of others.
The people in my life during high school that I considered my closest friends were Jackie and Tim Beaulieu, Frank Teras, Ralph Cabana, Linda Cannell, and others as well. Over the years, I have reconnected with many of my former classmates and developed lasting friendships. The people from high school that I am most looking forward to seeing at the 50th reunion are - OMG - there are way too many people to list here - YOU all KNOW who YOU are!!!
I have absolutely no regrets in my life and can honestly say that I would not change a single thing! Growing up, I could not have imagined the life I have had! I have lived, loved, lost, and I have learned! I have done things and been places I could not ever have dared dream of doing or going to when I graduated from high school in 1970.
In life, we are given no guarantees, and honestly, we do not ever truly know what life holds in store for us! All any of us can do is follow the path(s) to our Destiny. The Universe is filled with magnificence, mystery, power, and limitless possibilities! All we need do is remain open to the opportunities presented to us by the Universe and grab hold of the "brass ring" - each of us living our lives fully utilizing the abilities and talents bestowed upon us at the moment of our birth.
