Lena's Story

Hi! I'm here to update this "Your Story" section in order to have a chance at winning the $10,000 prize for doing so! Let's see... where should I start? OK, at the beginning... I was born on March 21, 1970 at a very early age. :)) We left my birthplace of Nebraska, while I was still in preschool (something about not wanting us to grow up and become "Corn Huskers" ... not that there's anything wrong with them, mind you.) An Air force "brat," we traveled around the globe before settling in Atwater, California where my father was stationed at Castle Air Force Base). ("Around the globe"... Nebraska to California is FAR!) There, I attended Preschool at a Montessori pre-school (Hi Miss Berry!), Kindergarten through the start of 3rd grade at Thomas Oleata, most of 3rd grade at Fremont Elementary (actually in Merced, CA) and 4th grade at Bellevue Elementary (after a 2-week beginning-of-the year stint at Shaffer elementary). It was after 4th grade that my mother drug my sisters and I kicking and screaming from small town Atwater-living to "big city" Sacramento-("ok, large cow-town)living. I'm glad she did! Here, I attended 5th grade at Oakdale Elementary and 6th grade at Frontier Elementary. (Mr. Lala and Mr. Starkey, respectively, were the best! Mr. Colby and Mr. Saunders were also great. How you'd get (all) three fantastic 6th grade teachers in one school is beyond me! While I'm on the subject, wasn't our 6th-grade trip to Dillon's Beach amazing and an incredibly creative way for our 3 individual teachers to get us to study Ornithology, Marine Biology, and Astronomy before we went?) Then it was on to 7th and 8th grades! Foothill Farms Jr. High was where I made lasting memories and friendships that would last until today. While there, thanks to my classmates, I was elected Class Representative in the 7th grade and school President in the 8th grade (Spring) (narrowly beating out incumbent James Sharpe - a formidable opponent and great guy. Hey, anyone know where he is now?) While at F.F.J.H.S., I enjoyed Cheerleading (where on earth are Kristy Livingston and Charlie Carlstroem??), playing on the 7th-grade Basketball Team (Thanks Kelly for the photo on Facebook), and Girls Intramural Flag Football. (Does anyone remember our game-winning plays: the old-school (NFL) "Statue of Liberty" and another: our offense saying "Wait, wait! Stop!" ...without calling "time" and so, the defense and everyone would stop yet our ball-carrier would run down field and into the end zone! Clever. ... of course it only worked until the other teams caught on.) In the 9th grade, I matriculated to Foothill High along w/ the gang and yet was ripped from my comfort-zone half-way through the year and dumped at Del Campo High in Carmichael! (Ok, dumped may be a stretch since, once I was told I had to find a school in my residential district (San Juan), I chose that school myself and went somewhat willingly (my, then, boyfriend was there so, it was actually an easy choice. Hi Alex!) I remained at Del Campo through my Sophomore year before having enough!... I was the only African American Sophomore girl and, while that would have been fine by me (the students were great), many of the TEACHERS held racist attitudes, made off-color remarks, and two even attempted to use their positions to make things difficult for me and even attempt to fail me! Thankfully I kept all of my GRADED homework (... "you never turned it in" my foot!) and with relief, stepped down from my head-cheerleader position (I didn't sell enough seat cushions - NOT a requirement yet Mrs. Shieble - that's right, you're on front-street now - tried to make my cheer life miserable! Ya thin...Expand for more
k she had a problem with ME being "head" cheer? I do.). CRAZY! Soooo, it was back to Foothill... (yet I miss my Del Campo friends) Back in my element, I quickly took up where I'd left off at Foothill High and enjoyed reconnecting with my classmates and pals. I kept busy with homework, running track (hey Nancy!), and working at Nugget Market (corner of Greenback Ln. and Auburn Blvd.... it's now a Pet Store). Along with my classmates, in the Spring of 1988, I graduated. Like an eagle takes flight to survey it's territory, I left FHS and soared on to see what was before me. Bigger and better things... (Enter Chico State.) Did I say "better"? HA!!! No really, college was a nice learning and maturing experience. I could go on about my activities and exploits but, I'll suffice it to list a few as bullets: * Board member- Activity Fee Committee * Chair - Activity Fee Committee * Track and Field (Sprints & Hurdles) * N.I.H. Internship in Bethesda, MD * Changed major from Bio. to Psy. * Little sister- Kappa Alpha Psi Frat. Graduated in 1994 (WHAT??!! I was gone on an internship and 5 years is quite common! Get off me!) :)) After college I worked for a time at MCI (1994-1995)and some temporary positions before meeting the love of my life, Anthony. I continued to work for various companies including Vision Service Plan (1996-1999), and Family Service Agency/Birth & Beyond (1999 - 2000)before attending McGeorge Law School (Sacramento) for the first of a 3-year JD program (2000-2001). I found that being a lawyer wasn't for me and got back into my educated line of work when I gained employment with Sacramento County's Dept. of Health & Human Services Division (2002). I was, unfortunately, overworked as a CPS Social Worker (Informal Supervision... they should call it "Intensive" Supervision) before moving on to start and maintain my own company: Williams' Inc. My Co-founding husband acts as our Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer while he continues in his long-standing career with Hewlett Packard as a Computer Engineer. Not only am I Co-Founder and President of our small company but, I also work within our business primarily as a Domestic Engineer. (FINE!... I'm a Stay At Home Mom!... I said it! ... and feeling very blessed, happy, and proud to be working so closely with my husband and little "colleagues.") That brings me to my children. My incredibly smart and kind son Isaiah was born in 2004. Adorable and feisty Zachary came along in 2006. These two are 21 mos. apart and very close (when they are not fussing over superheros and cars). Beautiful and sweet Leah brought up the rear here recently when she joined our family in 2008. That does it for us, as far as kids, as we move forward watching these three grow and thrive. On and off during these last 6 years, I've worked as an Independent Consultant with Creative Memories and have only recently put that aside as I focus on the children (read: they would not let ME focus on Creative Memories). I still enjoy scrapbooking and do it as often as I can as it is a relaxing and rewarding pass-time for me. What else?... That just about does it although I'd like to give Nichelle Williams "Honorable Mention" here. Do you remember her from Foothill Jr. High? You know... very sweet, tall, pretty... Well, she and I are still best friends and she's still just as sweet, tall, and beautiful if not more-so now! (Don't ya just hate people w/ clear smooth skin!) I'm sure I left something out but, rather than continue to bore anyone, I'll just end my bid for the $10,000 with one final shout out to our troops who daily put their lives on the line... THANK YOU! Adieu.
