Margaret's Story

I Went to work for Southern Bell in 1961. Graduated from GHS in June, 1962. Married Bob Barber August 1, 1962. Our son David was born July 20, 1963. Southern Bell paid for me to go to college. Was promoted over the training group in 1965. Graduated from the UF. Promoted to manage 4 offices. Moved with Southern Bell to Orlando in 1976. Managed a Force and Facilities group over 4 offices in the Orlando area. Worked on my Masters at Rollins College in Winter Park. Was promoted and moved to Atlanta Headquarters in the Human Resources Training Group January, 1981. Managed the Florida, George, North and South Carolina training organizations for the BellSouth Leadership Institute, responsible for Leadership/Management/Teamwork training. Took an early buyout May, 1996. Transitioned to training consultant for BellSouth with my own consulting company. Trained all over the US, Europe and South America. In 2007 transitioned to consult with AT&T when they purchased BellSouth. I still travel and train all over the US and love what I do. It gives me the opportunity to work with a lot of great people. Bob retired as president of Edmondson Junior College in 1996 and we bought our home and moved to Sarasota. We love Sarasota which is on the coast and we have two of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We have a 34' Hunter sailboat which we thoroughly enjoy. We both love to travel. We've been all over the US, western Europe, most of the Caribbean Islands, C...Expand for more
entral and South America. We are in the process of planning a 3 week vacation to the Hawaiian Islands. We plan to stay a week on each of the islands, Oahu, the Big Island and Maui. We have one son, David, who is a Lutheran pastor in Glenview, IL, which is a suburb or Chicago. He has a wonderful wife, Ann, and we love her as our daughter. They have three sons, Benjamin, Daniel and Timothy. Ben has a scholarship at Valparaiso. He plans to double major in Physics and Mechanical Engineering. Dan is a junior in high school and Tim is in the eighth grade. We have all traveled to Europe together and we spend as much time as we can with them. They are fantastic kids and we are truly blessed. Both of my parents and my sister passed away a number of years ago. My three brothers still live in the Gainesville area and we visit the area frequently. It's amazing to see all the changes that have occurred since we moved away. I am currently the editor of a newsletter (Beacon 22) for District 22 of USPS. The United States Power Squadrons is an international boating organization that provides safe boating courses to the public. District 22 covers from Tallahassee to Naples on the west coast of Florida with over 3500 members. Some of the things I enjoy the most are sailing, traveling, reading, music (all kinds), games and puzzles, genealogy, and attending the theater and opera. We are truly fortunate to have all the arts in Sarasota. (More later)
