Lenny's Story
Life
I joined the Navy right after graduation, and during my 25 year career I was fortunate enough to visit 135 different places. I met the girl who would eventually become my wife while serving on a ship together in Norfolk Virginia. I am very happily married going on 40 years. My wonderful wife and 2 sons endured 23 years of my career in the U S Navy. I retired from the Navy in April of 2003. I worked as the Chief Engineer at West Michigan Shared Hospital Laundry in Grand Rapids Michigan for 14 years, and now I am the Safety Director for Rite-Way Plumbing & Heating inc.. My 2 sons are grown and living on their own, I have 3 awesome granddaughters 6, 12 & 14.
School
I was pretty much a dweeb in high school...squirrely at best...and probably not very well liked...but I learned an awful lot from all of the people I went to high school with. Cellar Rats Rule!
College
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Fine Arts. Accounting sucked, but the best part was all of the people I met who were exponentially more stupid than I thought I was. Getting your college degree in your 40's and 50's is underrated. Learning is so much more fun when you are actually motivated to do it. Going to school in an old car dealership has advantages...and disadvantages...I haven't suffered any since graduation but time will tell. Want to give a shout out to all my peeps from Columbia College, and Ken...Expand for more
dall College of Art and Design.
Workplace
Starting my life as a tool and die maker at Cole-Hersee in Southie was the smartest thing I ever did. I learned a great deal from guys like John Hepke, Bob Sutherland, Charlie Pasquarillo, Eddie Antonowicz, Joe Fisher, and Jimmy Costello. Paul O'Sullivan, Bill Lynch and Milford Humphries. Worked as the Chief Engineer at West Michigan Shared Hospital Laundry, and I am currently the Safety and DOT Manager at Rite-Way Plumbing & Heating.
Military
Wow how time flies!!!! I can't believe 25 years could pass so quickly. I also can't believe I made it to CWO3! Anyone who knew me as a young Sailor would be surprised. I made the entire time without being sent to the brig once!! I would have probably stayed in the Navy for the full 30 years if it weren't for having to stand watches and stand duty. I was fortunate enough to visit 135 different places in 35 countries overseas during my time in the Navy, I crossed the equator twice went through both the Panama and Suez Canals twice and was involved in the Challenger and TWA Flight 800 recovery operations, the American Embassy hostage operations in Iran 1979, the peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Liberia. I don't have all pleasant memories, but the bad ones are outweighed by the good ones for sure. I made some friends for life in the Navy...really close friends...too bad we are all separated by hundreds of miles.
