Leo Andy:

CLASS OF 1956
Clarksburg, WV

Leo's Story

I have always felt that the Class of '56 was really mine. I left WI at the start of my Junior year and graduated in '56 from Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, WV. I received undergraduate degree from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina; MS from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville,TN; PhD from the University of South Africa. I served 2 tours in Viet-Nam (1962-64--The Advisory Phase of the War). I was able to attend the Language School at Monterery, CA and learned to read, write and speak Vietnamese. I was one of the 1st Americans to serve in The Republic of Viet-Nam (RVN). Although my time in RVN was considered the "Advisory Phase of the War", I can assure you that it was a WAR and more than Advisory. My primary responsibilities were advising the 2nd Vietnamese Rangers from Pleiku and Qui Nhon in training, operations, and coordinating combat operations. During my active duty service, I was privileged and honored to serve with the 2nd Infantry Division, 8th Transportation Company (Light Helicopter), 117th Aviation Company (Air Mobile Light), The 8th and 117th were actually the same unit with a change of unit designation, 1st and 5th Special Forces Group (ABN), Military Assistance Adviisory Group (MAAG) Viet-Nam, Military Assistance Command Viet-Nam (MACV) and the 11th Air assault which later became the 1st Cavalry Division. I was blessed to have outstanding individuals in my commands that made me look good--often in spite of me. Very early I could see that the War was not going to be the short operati...Expand for more
on forwhich we originally thought. The conduct of the War was changing. Many of the decisions were politically motivated. I was taught and trained that Wars are either won or lost. Wars are won by soldiers, airmen, sailors, marines, and coast gardsmen--it takes them all---not politicians. I had a regular army commission and chose to revert to a reserve and leave active duty; however, I later remained active in the Tennessee Guard. Prior to my retirement in 2008, I was priviledged to command one of the Divisions of the Military Department of Tennessee. I retired as a Major General (2 Stars). I remained single until 1971 when I married Brenda Layman Andy, and we have 2 sons (Leo III and James Layman Andy) both of whom are veterans. In 2012 Agent Orange and age finally caught up with me, and I had open heart surgery, 6-CABG and an implanted pacemaker. The surgery was a suprise. I never had a heart attack. My wife, Brenda, retired from The University of Tennessee on May 31, and I had surgery on 11-12 June. We live in Tracy Ciity, TN which is about half way between Nashville and Chattanooga. Founder Ranger Trucking Company and later sold. When Dad became ill, we moved to Parkersburg to help him with his companys (Sidney;s Beauty & Barber Supply, Inc and Andy's Beauty & Barber Supplies, Inc). After Mother (Thelma) and Dad (Leo) passed away, I liquidated both companys and moved back to TN. Currently own and operate Rover Security Consultants,Inc. (most work is done overseas-Southeast Asia and Africa). I am doing fine! . .
