Leonard's Story
I am a Governance & Quality Systems Engineer with over 13 years experience. I implement systems by: Learning what people do, Mapping the flow of their work, Documenting the steps that they take, and then proposing ways for them to meet the requirements of National or International Standards. I have successfully done this with manufacturing, telecom, software, and financial industry companies. Each industry has separate standards such as: ISO 9001, TL9000, TS16959, Cobit, SEI:CMMI, Sarbanes-Oxley, FFIEC, Malcolm Baldrige, and other standards. Currently, I know of NO universities that teach these standards, nor the methods necessary to create comprehensive systems that comply with them. e substantially self-taught. Professional courses from the publishers of the standards are a great help, but do not provide a college-level degree. As a result, systems engineers usually have degrees in hard sciences, business management, etc.
Here's something for you to think about. My most recent online queries of all the major search engines showed that there are more GRADUATE programs in systems engineering than there are UNDERGRADUATE programs! The current atmosphere appears to be that somewhere between the time that you graduate with a non-systems engineering degree, and the time that you decide to go back to get your Masters degree, you magically acquire the necessary skills to be an undergraduate systems engineer.
