Leslie's Story

Life After graduation, I attended college at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology and secondary education. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with that degree. I was either going to become a world-renowned geology researcher or a high school teacher…I was torn between the two options. I put all of that on hold and married a wonderful man and worked odd jobs to put him through graduate school. When he graduated and started working, I picked up my plans again, but I was still not sure what I wanted to do with my life. I earned a Master of Science degree in geology from Michigan State University. During that time, my two options began to blend and mesh together. I decided I wanted to teach AND do research, but it would have to be at the college level. So, I started working toward a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in geology five years ago. I am planning (and really, really hoping) to graduate with my Ph.D. in December of this year. After graduation I would like to start a career as a college professor. So here we are, 20 years out of high school and I am still a student…kinda sad, huh? Maybe at some point I’ll quit pulling all-nighters and studying for exams long enough to have children. But, until such a day, its study, study, study.
